The British Tribe Next door viewers praise ‘strength’ of Himba woman who has to give birth alone in SILENCE – as Scarlett Moffatt jokes her ‘cervix hurts’ just thinking about it

  • Scarlett Moffatt experienced Himba childbirth in The British Tribe Next Door
  • Uakaa, 24, told how she gave birth ‘by herself’ and in ‘silence’ as others slept
  • Viewers commended her strength and said: ‘We have pain relief and still scream’

Viewers were left in shock when Scarlett Moffatt and her family experienced Himba childbirth first-hand in The British Tribe Next Door.

In last night’s episode of the Channel 4 show, the former Gogglebox star met 24-year-old Uakaa before she was very close to giving birth – and pointed out she was very smiley considering she was in labour.

‘I’m having pain but I’m just pretending I don’t feel it,’ explained Uakaa. ‘In our culture you have to pretend to be brave.’

‘Himba women are not allowed to scream, we should keep quiet or it seems as if you’re afraid of the baby coming.’

And gobsmacked viewers were quick to take to social media following the revelation.

‘Strength of a woman eh! Giving birth on her own whilst everyone is asleep. If it were me the whole village would have been awake,’ wrote one, while a second commented:

‘Giving birth in silence is unheard of in the west. Pregnant women about to deliver are heavily medicated but still scream very loud in pain!’

Many took to social media to commend the strength of the women. ‘Giving birth on her oen whilst everyone is asleep. If it were me the whole village would have been awake’ (pictured)

A third added: ‘We have pain relief and still scream!! Them women are soldiers,’ while a fourth enthused:

‘There is definitely no way I could have been as calm as that lady in labour.’

The show told how most of the children in the village were born there – often without any outside medical assistance.

‘It’s my first child,’ explained a calm Uakaa, who was in labour. ‘My mother will come and help deliverer the baby. I would like five children.’

Uakaa (pictured) explained that while she was experiencing pain during labour, she pretends she can’t feel it

Scarlett told the Himba women that back home, screaming and crying during labour is seen as ‘normal.’ Pictured, with her mother Betty

Scarlett explained that when people at home are in labour, they’re not as ‘chilled’ as her – and added ‘there’s s a lot of tears and screaming.’

But another member of the tribe explained: ‘If she starts screaming like that I will say: “Why are you doing that stop it!”

‘It’s not easy to give birth. When you have your first child you always say never again!’

Speaking to the camera following their exchange, Scarlett said: ‘I don’t understand how you can push a human out of your vagina and not make a noise.’

‘The strength of these women is just unbelievable. It’s hurting my cervix just thinking about it. But that is part of their tradition – they are so passionate and proud about their culture they do not want to break any of those traditions.’

Later in the episode, Scarlett showed some of the Himba women One Born Every Minute – so they could see the differences in childbirth.

‘I find it embarrassing when they scream like that,’ commented one. ‘In our culture, the men are not allowed to be at the birth.’

Later in the episode, Uakaa showed off her newborn baby girl and explained: ‘I gave birth by myself whilst everyone was asleep. When they woke up the baby was already here.’

And many took to Twitter to commend the strength of the Himba women – particularly Uakaa.

‘I’m six months pregnant with my first son and the thought of no hospital help would frighten the life out of me,’ wrote one, while a further added:

‘Another amazing episode! Giving birth in silence is unbelievable and I’ve given birth 4 times.’
