Tattoo shops were classed as non-essential businesses as of March 23, but thousands of retailers are preparing to reopen this month. Many tattoo and piercing fans are waiting in anticipation for when they can next visit their tattoo parlour. But when are tattoo shops reopening amid the coronavirus lockdown?

Boris Johnson outlined his roadmap for reopening England in stages after putting the country into lockdown last month.

On May 25 Mr Johnson hailed the move as a step towards “rebuilding our country”.

He urged Britons to return to the high street and “spend” to help the economy “bounce back”.

The new relaxation measures and safety guidance is due to enable millions to return to work and ensure people can safely shop.

From June 1, outdoor markets and car showrooms were permitted to reopen.

From Monday, June 15, a number of retailers are due to reopen including:

• Clothes shops
• Shoe shops
• Toy shops
• Indoor markets
• Photography studios
• Auction houses
• Tailors
• Electronic shops
• Book shops
• Furniture shops
• Gift shops and retail spaces in theatres, museums, libraries and heritage sites
• Mobile phone stores
• Craft fairs
• antique shops
• Betting shops and arcades
• Charity shops
• And any other non-essential retailer.

When are tattoo and piercing shops reopening?

According to Government guidance, hairdressers, barbers, beauty and nail salons, including piercing and tattoo parlours must remain closed until further notice.

There has been no official date given by Government on when these outlets will be able to reopen.

Failure to follow these rules could lead to fines and closures of the business.

What changes will likely be brought in when they do reopen?

Retailers who are permitted to open will be asked to adhere to the Government’s new guidance to ensure they are COVID-secure.

These measures are intended to prevent a second spike and retailers have been advised to undertake measures such as:

• Putting a post in their windows to demonstrate awareness of coronavirus guidance
• Storing returned items for 72 hours before putting them back on the shop floor
• Placing protective coverings on larger items such as sofas or beds
• Frequently cleaning items and surfaces which are touched regularly.

Government guidance for personal care industry businesses is expected to be strict.

Customers will likely be required to wear face masks and additional cleaning and sanitisation for equipment will be mandated.

Furthermore, it is likely customers will only be seen by appointment only and will not be permitted to shop until their appointment time.
