Incredible moment a ‘talking’ 11-month-old Australian shepherd asks his owners for ‘car food’ – aka a pup cup – after smelling their ice cream

  • Ripley uses talking buttons to communicate with his parents Gary and Kristina
  • He pressed the words car, food, and smell while they were eating ice cream
  • Ripley’s owners eventually realized he was asking for a drive-thru pup cup

A ‘talking’ Australian shepherd has gone viral after cleverly asking his owners to make him a pup cup while they were eating ice cream.

The 11-month-old dog named Ripley has more than 30,000 followers on TikTok, where his family shares incredible videos of him using FluentPet’s recordable talking buttons to say what’s on his mind.

The adorable pooch amazed his parents Gary and Kristina last week when he walked over to buttons hanging on the wall and asked for ‘car food’ while they were having ice cream in the living room.

‘Car food?’ his mom asked.

An 11-month-old Australian shepherd named Ripley has gone viral after using his talking buttons to ask his owners Gary and Kristina for a whipped cream pup cup

Ripley first asked for ‘car food’ while his mom and dad were eating ice cream on the couch. He then pressed the word ‘smell’ on the soundboard to help them figure out what he wanted

Kristina realized the smell of their ice cream reminded Ripley of the whipped cream pup cups they get him at the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru

Ripley then hit the ‘smell’ button, prompting even more confusion.

The couple was trying to decode their dog’s message when they realized the smell of their ice cream reminded him of the whipped cream pup cups they get him at the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru.

‘It smells like a pup cup! We’re having vanilla ice cream,’ Kristina explained to Gary. ‘The only food he’s ever had in the car is a pup cup. What is the single ingredient in a pup cup? Cream. What are we eating right now? Vanilla ice cream.’

The footage then cut to them preparing a small cup of whipped cream for their super-smart pooch.

‘Every time I go through the Dunkin’ drive-thru he starts sniffing the air. We were having ice cream that night. Amazing!’ they wrote in the caption.

The video has been viewed more than 3.8 million times and has received over 2,200 comments from fans who were equally impressed with Ripley — including Dunkin’ Donuts.

‘That’s a good boy for sure,’ the coffee chain replied.

Gary and Kristina have been documenting Ripley’s progress since late last spring, when he was just a puppy. They taught him his first word using the talking buttons on June 2, 2022

In one early clip, Ripley was filmed pressing the ‘ice’ button while licking an ice cube in the kitchen to narrate what he was doing

Ripley is now up to 59 words on his sound board, according to his Instagram bio

‘That dog is a genius,’ someone else insisted. ‘He single-handedly got them to play charades to figure out what he wanted.’

‘That way I got giddy at him getting his treat after being so smart,’ another added.

The talking buttons that Ripply uses are based on alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) devices that give non-verbal people a way to communicate, according to PetMD.

The circular buttons each have words on them, and they were pre-recorded by his owners to say the words when pressed.

Gary and Kristina have been documenting Ripley’s progress with their growing soundboard since late last spring, when he was just a puppy.

They taught him his first word using the talking buttons on June 2, 2022, and nearly a year later, he is up to 59 words, according to his Instagram bio.

The couple started with a few buttons that they kept on the floor, but they later mounted them on the wall as his word count continued to increase.

Ripley really loves his Grandma! This happened multiple times this day. This was the first time. Stay tuned… ? #australianshepherd #fluentpet #talkingdog #dogswhotalk #dogmom #dogdad #puppy #doglover #grandma #smartdog #aussiesoftiktok #puppylove

Ripley’s conversational skills have earned him millions of views in recent weeks

Ripley also went viral on Tuesday after using his talking buttons to ask for ‘Grandma’ the day after he last saw her

‘Did you just press Grandma?’ Kristina asked. ‘You can’t see Grandma right now, but we can text her and tell her you want to see her’

Ripley, who isn’t always patient, replied, ‘Go Grandma’

In one early clip, Ripley was filmed pressing the ‘ice’ button while licking an ice cube in the kitchen. The couple explained in the on-screen text that the pooch ‘often narrates what he is doing.’

Another showed him asking for his food after his mom prepared his breakfast and left it on the counter while playing with him.

Ripley’s conversational skills have earned him millions of views in recent weeks. He went viral on Tuesday — the second time in two days — after using his talking buttons to ask for ‘Grandma.’

‘Did you just press Grandma?’ Kristina asked. ‘You can’t see Grandma right now, but we can text her and tell her you want to see her.

‘Go Grandma,’ Ripley responded.

Kristina explained in the on-screen text that the Aussie started pressing the grandma button the day after he last saw her.

‘Ripley really loves his Grandma!’ she added in the caption. ‘This happened multiple times this day. This was the first time. Stay tuned…’
