Supermodel Lauren Hutton, 78, poses topless for Harper’s Bazaar as she details her barebones beauty regimen – admitting she ‘doesn’t spend time on skin care’ because she’s ‘usually in a rush to make love or read’

Six decades into her career, Lauren Hutton has proven that age is only a number by posing topless for the cover of Harper’s Bazaar at 78 years old. 

The supermodel looked back on her boundary-breaking career and opened up about her skincare routine as one of the stars of the fashion magazine’s May Beauty Issue, which features four individual covers. 

Hutton, who shares the spotlight with fellow models Sora Choi, Imaan Hammam, and Jill Kortleve, was photographed by artist Cass Bird for the high-fashion shoot.

Hutton is fresh-faced and flashing her signature gap-toothed for the camera in the magazine’s spread highlighting her natural beauty. While she has an undeniable glow in the photos, she admitted to having a barebones beauty routine.  

‘I don’t spend a lot of time on skin care. I’m usually in a rush to get to bed and make love or read,’ she told Harper’s Bazaar, sharing that she is currently reading ‘Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay.’ 

‘The only beauty ritual I have is washing my face with soap and water. It’s horrifying. Then I’ll put on the StriVectin S.T.A.R. Light Retinol Night Oil. It does really good things for your skin. I also have an aloe plant. I cut the leaves open, and I put it all over my face and décolletage.’ 

‘I put castor oil in my hair too,’ she added. ‘It’s from a beautiful bean. I use one from Briogeo. I just put it on my fingertips and rub it all over my scalp, and it makes my hair a little less dry and nasty.’ 

Based on the stunning images from her latest shoot, Hutton’s less-is-more approach to beauty is clearly working. 

In one image, she is posing in a crisp white blazer while her wild blonde curls blow behind her. Another shows her holding a mint green tweed blazer closed over her chest as she peers into the camera. 

Hutton has been modeling since the 1960s, but she said she didn’t know anything about the industry when she moved to New York and started working. 

‘When it comes to cosmetic procedures, there’s a real thin line you tread,’ she said. ‘There are people who I find hard to look at today. Their faces don’t look like the people I once knew’

Hutton has spent six decades in front of the camera, but she shared that she still becomes self-conscious when the lens is focused on her

‘Modeling is like playing the violin: You have to practice every day,’ she explained

‘I got a job modeling for Christian Dior for $50 a week,’ she explained. ‘Once I started working, I made myself an athlete. I uncrossed my eyes. (Dick Avedon used to look up at me from behind his camera and ask, “Are they straight yet?”) 

‘I jumped around. I worked hard. But by 1972, there weren’t many of us models left. All the big girls like Veruschka, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton had basically split.’

In 1973, Hutton scored a career-changing contract with Revlon, which was ‘the biggest one in modeling history’ at the time. 

She explained that she was about to turn 30 and wanted to ensure that she would continue modeling for years to come. She also started working as an actress around that time before she returned to modeling in her mid-40s.  

Hutton said that she likes to picture her lover or her friends when she is in front of the camera

‘So then I started shooting with Steven Meisel, and I told him, “I’m not going to try and look younger,” and he said, “I love that. That’s why I am working with you,”‘ she recalled. 

‘When it comes to cosmetic procedures, there’s a real thin line you tread,’ she noted. ‘There are people who I find hard to look at today. Their faces don’t look like the people I once knew.’

Hutton has spent decades in front of the camera, but she shared that she still becomes self-conscious when the lens is focused on her.  

‘Modeling is like playing the violin: You have to practice every day,’ she explained. ‘Now when I look at the camera, I’ve learned to picture my lover’s face, my godkids’ faces, my friends’—whoever I need in there.’
