When Trump flew to England over the summer, Markle was slammed by the media for not taking time away from her maternity leave to meet with the American president. Still, with this latest move, Markle has shown that she isn’t on such a tight leash as many in the media would have people believe.
In fact, she’s “broken” a number of royal rules without seeming to get in trouble. Keep reading to learn how Duchess Meghan has marched to the beat of her own drum since joining the royal family.
Meghan Markle has worked on special projects
Duchess Meghan had her own career long before marrying Prince Harry. And even though she had to leave the acting world behind when she joined the royal family, she has continued to pursue many of her own interests.
Markle made headlines when she curated the September 2019 issue of British Vogue. The special issue focused on women who are actively involved in changing the world, and Markle was very hands-on in designing and guest-editing the important issue. She received some criticism for working with such a big-name magazine, but it was clear that Markle was passionate about the issue.
While many critics have claimed that Markle tries to draw too much attention to herself by working on such outside-the-box projects, the truth of the matter is that there are no set rules in place to prevent her from doing such things. Granted, the royal family is traditionally a private bunch, but Markle has been shaking things up — and in a new, interesting way.
Duchess Meghan also isn’t afraid to speak out and reveal her personal feelings on occasion. This was made especially clear when she and Prince Harry participated in a documentary that chronicled their trip to Africa in the late summer.
What royal fashion rules have Meghan Markle broken?
Duchess Meghan has been dubbed a royal “rule breaker” when it comes to the way she dresses. There’s no doubt that Markle knows how to work a red carpet and understands what it means to dress to impress.
Still, she has managed to find a way of dressing that doesn’t defy convention while still challenging the royal norms. For example, Markle made the news when she appeared at an event with dark nail polish: It was traditionally thought of as a no-no for royal women.
The Duchess of Sussex has also been spotted wearing off-the-shoulder dresses and sporting a crossbody bag, instead of the more royal-friendly clutch. All of this proves that Markle feels comfortable enough to establish her own royal style and isn’t too worried about repercussions from the royal family.
Meghan Markle has a lot of freedom
In addition to her own streak of independence, it seems as though Duchess Meghan has had a positive effect on Prince Harry as well. Shortly after their May 2018 wedding, the couple made the bold move of re-establishing themselves in their very own house, outside of Buckingham Palace. Prince Harry has also seemingly become more comfortable with speaking out regarding causes he cares deeply about, such as global warming and protecting the environment.
All of this just goes to show that Markle has a great deal more freedom than many seem to believe. The Duchess of Sussex is certainly under a microscope, just like other members of the royal family, but has managed to find a way to live her own truth while still working within the confines of the royal family.
