CROWDED beaches putting you off a trip to the coast?

If you are still keen on keeping your distance — while saving a few quid on a day out — bring the seaside to your own home.

The kids will love a DIY “beach” and setting one up is a fun task for everyone.

You can even add sand and ice creams for good measure thanks to these savvy ideas.

Sand as a pound: Bring the beach to you with a sandpit in the garden.
The plastic sand or water pit at studio.co.uk for £24.99 is great. Plus you can get up to 11.5 per cent cashback when buying via topcashback.co.uk. To fill your pit, you can get two 10kg bags of sand from tesco.com for £4. Bargain.

Water winner: Next, you need some water. Add a splash zone to your beach with a paddling pool that is quick to set up. I like the Bestway 10ft Fast Set inflatable pool, £54.99 over at jdwilliams.co.uk. For smaller gardens and more modest budgets, a 6ft version costs £24.99 at houseoffraser.co.uk.

Brolly-ant idea: When the sun is blazing like these past few days, you need plenty of shade. So set up a beach-style brolly in the garden. I love the multi-coloured parasol with UV protection, just £10 at theworks.co.uk. It is far cheaper than the similar ones at produceshopdesign.com, even though they are currently down from £66.95 to £34.95.

Flake it: It wouldn’t be a trip to the beach without ice cream. Whip up a treat with Kelly’s Cornish Clotted Cream ice cream, currently £2.50 at Asda, down from £3.99. You can also nab a pack of four Cadbury Flakes for just £1 (split these to make eight “99” ice creams). Serve them in Askey’s classic cones, £1 for a pack of 21, also at Asda. Easy.
