Rehema Muthamia is crowned Miss England 2021 by NHS Doctor

Newly-crowned Miss England 2021 winner, 25, who grew up in Kenya and speaks four languages, says escaping an abusive relationship inspired her to enter the beauty pageant

The latest woman to be crowned Miss England has revealed escaping an abusive relationship motivated her to enter the competition. 

Rehema Muthamia, 25, was crowned Miss England on Friday in a glittering ceremony in Coventry and will now represent England at the 70th Miss World in Puerto Rico later this year. 

Muthamia received the shimmering crown – along with £2,000 and a host of other goodies including a photoshoot and a website – from previous winner Bhasha Mukherjee, an NHS doctor who held the title for two years after the pandemic saw last year’s ceremony cancelled.

Rehema spent part of her childhood in Kenya before moving over to England and studying at the University of Sussex

Before scooping the top prize in the pageant, which took place at the Heart of England Conference and Events centre in the Midlands city, the 25-year-old had also won the first ever Miss All African Colours contest. 

The Mr England winner was also announced as 28-year-old Liam Royce from Banbury, Oxfordshire. 

Muthamia spent part of her childhood in Kenya before moving over to England and studying at the University of Sussex.

The health technology consultant, who can speak four languages, said: ‘My family are so supportive they can’t stop talking about it, and the Kenyan community has really got behind me and wanted to support me and loved seeing someone from my heritage being represented.’

She also revealed how enduring an abusive relationship had helped her to be stronger as a woman.   

She revealed: ‘I would have to say that the most difficult experience that I’ve had in life is having gone through an abusive relationship and it’s not something that people speak about often. 

Rehema is passionate about science and studied genetics at the University of Sussex, graduating during the height of the pandemic last year

The beauty wore a shimmering crown adorned with the St George’s flag as she received the winning sash and a trophy

Rehema will now represent England at the 70th Miss World in Puerto Rico later this year; she pocketed £2,000 in cash for scooping the top prize

She told organisers of the event: ‘The Kenyan community has really got behind me and wanted to support me and loved seeing someone from my heritage being represented’

 Finalists: After being cancelled last year because of Covid restrictions, the winners and runners up in Miss and Mr England were able to mingle more freely this year

The Mr England winner was also announced as 28-year-old Liam Royce from Banbury, Oxfordshire, pictured centre with other competitors in the national beauty pageant 

The winner also took home a wardrobe full of glamorous evening and occasion wear

‘But having gone through a relationship that was abusive it helped me learn more about myself.’

Muthamia added: ‘Knowing that I was able to come through that experience, learn more about myself and my worth, who I am as a woman and be able to now use this platform in Miss England to help other women is amazing’.

She will now represent England at the 70th Miss World in Puerto Rico and pocketed £2,000 in cash alongside a wardrobe of evening and occasion wear, a photoshoot, a personalised website, luggage and a glamour mirror.
