Prince William Is Catching Backlash Over His Birthday Message to Prince Harry

09/16/2019

These days, it feels like the royal family catches backlash over almost everything they do. From their fashion choices to their postures, people often seem to find the most insignificant things to criticize. And, sadly, it doesn’t seem like that’s changing any time soon.

Most recently, trolls latched on to Prince William’s birthday tribute to Prince Harry. The Instagram post featured a sweet and simple message and one of the most adorable throwback photos of the brothers. But some people weren’t so impressed. They flooded the comments calling the tribute stale, cold, and “generic.”

A closer look at Prince William’s birthday message to Prince Harry

On the morning of Sept. 15, the Duke of Cambridge took to his and his wife Kate Middleton’s joint Instagram account to wish Prince Harry a happy 35th birthday.

“Wishing a very happy birthday to the Duke of Sussex today!” read the post, which ended with a cute birthday cake emoji.

The post also featured a photo of the brothers smiling at each other on Prince Harry’s wedding day back on May 19, 2018.

The post received mixed reactions

As you can imagine, hundreds of royal fans flooded the comments and praised Prince William’s message to his brother, with many calling it “beautiful” and “classy.”

But there were arguably just as many critics, who posted comments criticizing the duke.

“He could’ve sent a more heartfelt message [than] this generic one. This is his only little brother,” one person wrote.

“This message is so cold and not from the heart. It’s so sad,” someone else added.

“This makes me sad. I truly wish they were close again,” commented another.

A fourth person wrote, “[It’s] such a pity that those lovely brothers don’t appear to be close anymore.”

And others felt that Prince William shouldn’t have posted anything given that Prince Harry didn’t post a birthday tribute on the Sussex Royal account for his big brother back in June. (However, he and Meghan Markle did wish the duke a happy birthday in a comment on the Kensington Palace account.)

“Well done. Be the bigger brother to the more younger spoiled brat who didn’t post anything on William’s birthday,” someone said.

“True class act. Harry and Meghan didn’t post anything for William’s birthday,” wrote another person.

Another person echoed those comments, writing, “[The] Cambridge family is classy as always. If I were William, I’d ignore Harry’s birthday, just like he ignored William’s.”

It’s not the first time a member of the royal family has faced backlash over a social media post

Prince Harry and Markle also faced backlash over a birthday tribute to Prince George.

The drama started on July 22 when the palace released a series of photos of Prince George that were taken by his mother.

“Happy Birthday Prince George!” read the caption. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share new photographs of Prince George to mark His Royal Highness’s sixth birthday. This photograph was taken recently in the garden of their home at Kensington Palace by The Duchess of Cambridge. Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages!”

Another caption shared: “This photograph was taken on holiday with the family by The Duchess of Cambridge.”

The Sussexes hit the comment section to leave a sweet birthday message, writing, “Happy Birthday! Wishing you a very special day and lots of love!”

But fans were upset that they failed to refer to Prince George by his name and title and slammed the pair.

“He is the future KING. Treat him with respect” read one comment. “He is HRH Prince George to you!!!! Don’t forget to mention!” said another.

Yikes. Maybe the family should go the traditional route and send birthday cards in the future. Just saying.
