They’re two of the most talked about women on the planet, not only for their charitable work and being part of the most well known family in the world (sorry Kardashians), but also for their impeccable style.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle never fail to provide the public with envious outfit choices and style inspiration whenever they make a public appearance.

However, there was one day in both their lives when they set trends for future brides.

The British love a royal wedding. We all seem to get out our royalist sides and we become obsessed with the big day. What colour will the flowers be? What will the bride wear? Which designer is going to make the dress? Will it top Princess Diana’s iconic dress? The list goes on.

However, before the ceremony we all await for the happy couples to formally announce their engagement and get the first look at the royal engagement ring.

On the 20 October 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Diana’s blue sapphire ring. This was announced globally on 16 November and they were married in a stunning ceremony on 29 April 2011. The ring was the exact same which William’s father, Prince Charles, used to propose to Princess Diana on 3 February 1981.

However, when Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle in November 2017, instead of following his brother's path and using something straight from his mothers collection, Harry decided to design the sparkler himself.

The original ring had a gold band with three diamonds, the central jewel was from Botswana where they had previously holidayed together and the two side diamonds were taken from Princess Diana’s personal collection.

How do the rings compare?

As much as each ring has its own sentimental value and they’re both beautiful pieces of jewellery, a new study by EST1897 have compared the two rings and the results are interesting.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s ring is an oval cut and weighs in at 12 carats. Whereas Meghan’s is a cushion cut and is only five carats. These may be small differences in the scale of things, however, when it comes to the price, there is a large difference.

Kate’s ring is estimated to be worth £390,000 and Meghan’s is said to be worth around £134,500, therefore making Kate’s £255,000 more expensive.

We’re huge fans of both of these rings, however, Kate’s ring wins our vote due to the pure sentimental value and history behind it.
