Premier League fantasy football tips: Who could start for Man City at left-back? – Zinchenko vs Mendy vs Angelino

07/20/2019

Pep Guardiola became an enemy of fantasy football managers everywhere after his team selections made it impossible to predict who would start for Man City in the Premier League last season.

One thing that is for certain, Dream Team’s FREE 2019/20 game is officially live – you can sign up here!

If we know Pep (we don’t), nothing would have changed this season and left-back for Man City is one position in particular that will have gaffers tearing their hair out.

Premier League fantasy football tips: Who could start for Man City at left-back? – Zinchenko vs Mendy vs Angelino

Following Fabian Delph’s (£2m) departure for Everton, there are now three candidates in the running for the left-back berth at the Etihad; Oleksandr Zinchenko, Benjamin Mendy and Angelino.

Zinchenko (£3.5m) finished the season filling that role for City – another sign of the genius of Guardiola, as the converted attacking-midfielder is still yet to lose a Premier League game he’s played for the Citizens.

The safest bet is to assume that the Ukrainian’s position in the side is secure after his performances last season, however, with Pep, nothing is ever as simple.

It’s possible that had Mendy (£3.5m) been fit for the start of the season the Frenchman would have slotted back into the side as he remains the only experienced specialist in that role at the Etihad.

Mendy emerged as favourite of Dream Team gaffers early last season, earning consistent points for clean-sheets and assists, before injuries took their toll and the Frenchman was swiftly dumped from teams.

The maverick is currently scheduled to return to action around the start of September, making it paramount that you avoid picking him at the start of the season.

To bolster their left-back options, Man City exercised the buyback clause in the contract of Angelino (£1.5m) at PSV, a player who only left the club as recently as 2018.

The Spaniard started City’s pre-season friendly against West Ham and although the Citizens won, Angelino endured a torrid second-debut, conceding a penalty and was lucky not to give away another in what was a shocking first-half performance.

Angelino’s modest price of £1.5m makes him a tempting pick for gaffers and it could turn out to be a masterstroke if Pep does throw a curveball and turn to the Spaniard to be his first-choice left-back.

However, we still predict Zinchenko will pick up where he left off last season and start at left-back for City this season.

Don’t hold us to that prediction though, after all, Pep’s mind works in mysterious ways…
