Volunteers packed boxes during a Denver Urban Gardens starter kit pickup event at Montbello Academy 360 in Denver on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. The group gave out some 45,000 seedlings.

“In the wake of COVID-19, conversations around food systems, access, equity, and food insecurity have grown tremendously, particularly in areas that have experienced food shortages and supply disruption,” said Diego Romero, Senior Communications Managers with Sprouts, in an email. “Based on the US’s history with Victory Gardens during times of war and economic crisis, DUG’s new “To-Grow Boxes” come filled with seeds, seedlings, and educational resources to help anyone develop a green thumb and be able to feed themselves over the coming months. In partnership with Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, which has provided a grant to scale the project by 50%, DUG will be assembling 1,000 To-Grow Boxes for distribution in mid-May.  The To-Grow Boxes will be available for purchase on DUG’s website, as well as distributed to families facing food insecurity through DUG’s partnership in the Denver Community Food Access Coalition.”
