Give a dog a Christmas home! Pet sanctuary is full as poor pooches pay price for owners suffering amid cost of living crisis

Safe in the arms of their devoted rescuers, all these abandoned dogs want now is to be rehomed for Christmas.

Some were given up by breeders who could not sell them in the cost of living crunch. 

Others have been saved from cruelty but most come from owners who simply could not afford to keep them.

All 16 in our group picture are among scores arriving at Many Tears Animal Rescue every week.

Other dogs needing homes include five huskies – named Aware, Aloha, Arrow, Alpha and Alert – aged a year who came from a breeder and are said to be very nervous. Also featured are labrador pup Solo and Irish doodle Rooster.

But the centre near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, is threatened by the huge numbers coming in and its own high costs.

Sylvia Van Atta, 65, who has run the charity for 20 years, said: ‘We’re at maximum capacity: 300 in the kennels, 200 in foster homes and 150 on the waiting list. 

Nearly all these dogs are here because of the cost of living. People can’t afford food or vet bills.’

To keep going, Mrs Van Atta is selling her beloved antique caravan.

She said: ‘I never want to turn a dog away and any money we raise will go to them – the good, the bad, and the ugly. 

‘I know we’ll get through this with a bit of luck and help.’ Other dogs in the group photo include five-months-old cockapoos Braille and Mirror, and a nine-months-old bulldog-cross called Keith who is described as ‘lovely but very shy.’ 

Among those from bigger breeds are a Bernese Mountain Dog called Gem, and Tilo the German shepherd.
