One of the most premature babies ever to survive has celebrated her first birthday.

Sayanna Gordon arrived at only 23 weeks and five days, weighing 1lb 6oz. She is now almost 18lb.

Her mum Sanna Nieminen, 39, said: “Everybody is surprised at how well she is doing.

“She is really happy, always smiling. She has just learned how to sit and is practising crawling.”

Sanna thought she had four months to go when she went to hospital because of stomach pain.

It was discovered she was having contractions – and her little girl arrived was born later.

Healthcare assistant Sanna, of Abbey Wood, South East London, said: “She was the size of the palm of your hand. There were about 20 people in the room… they thought she was too small.

“They said ‘are you happy to let her go?’. I could see her moving… I said ‘please help her’. Everyone assumed she wouldn’t make it.”

The baby was transferred to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital where she spent a month on life support and was in the neonatal intensive care unit for four months.

Sayanna, who needed 13 blood transfusions, had a bleed on the brain, kidney failure, pneumonia, collapsed lungs and a bowel infection that led her to stop feeding.
