My son, 14, thinks he might be gay but I don't know how to assist him

DEAR DEIDRE: OUR son has just told me and his mum that he thinks he may be gay.

We support him 100 per cent but are unsure what information there is on how to assist him.

I am 42 and my wife is 39. Our son is 14. I have always had an inkling he might be gay but it still shocked me a bit to hear him come out with it. Is he just confused?

He is still so young to know about relationships. We have told him that we love him no matter what and he seems happy and relieved that we know, but I don’t know how best to handle it.

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s great that your open and loving response has given him the reassurance he needs. Encourage him to talk to you whenever he needs to.

You can find information and support through FFLAG – Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (fflag.org.uk, 0300 688 0368).
