Mother, 55, reveals lockdown forced her to end her decade-long affair with a married father-of-two – and says she is now getting on ‘better than ever’ with her husband of 27 years

  • Wife has been having an affair with a married man for the last 10 years
  • Couple, who both have children, have managed to get together once a month
  • Lockdown forced the couple to separate and focus on their respective marriages
  • The woman, in her 50s, says she now feels ‘closer than ever’ to her husband

A married woman revealed how lockdown put an end to a decade-long affair with a former flame – and led her to rediscover the joy of being with her husband.

Writing anonymously for the Daily Telegraph, the British mother-of-two, 55, explained she had been seeing the man, an ex-boyfriend from university who is married with two children, once a month for the last 10 years.

However lockdown put an end to their hotel rendez-vous and forced her to spend weeks at home in the south of England with her husband, a writer, without the distractions of frequent travel or the demands of their two grown-up children.

‘Being with him one-on-one for such a long period of time has been a huge change,’ she wrote.

‘And not only has it been survivable, it has been surprisingly positive. We’ve been married for 27 years and these last few months we have got on better than ever.’

The affair started in 2010 after the writer discovered her husband, who is given the pseudonym ‘David’, had been having an affair with a colleague.

Then in her 40s and the mother of two teenage children, the writer decided she did not want to leave her husband and instead worked towards ‘cobbling’ their marriage back together.

It was at this time that her ex-boyfriend, known as ‘Sam’, became a pillar of emotional support and the pair, who had previously kept in touch on an occasional basis, began texting and phoning more frequently.

After initially being a ‘shoulder to cry on’, the relationship with Sam developed into something more and the couple had sex for the first time.

The writer and Sam decided they did not want to leave their respective partners but agreed to continue meeting up.

‘Being together occasionally, we realised, meant we could both survive our marriages and so we agreed to keep seeing one another,’ the writer continued.

‘For the next few years we met up in hotels every month or so, and fitted in the occasional drink or dinner, and phone and text chats when we could.’

The writer explained she didn’t want to leave her husband for Sam because she didn’t want the ‘upheaval’ of tearing apart two families.

Indeed she believes having the outlet of the affair might have helped both she and Sam weather the rough patches in their respective marriages.

Reflecting on what a future without Sam might look like, she added: ‘It makes me sad, but it also makes me happy to think that, despite what some might think about people like us who are unfaithful, we’ve helped one another through choppy waters – and perhaps, even been responsible for the survival of two marriages that were floundering.

‘We’ve been each other’s confidantes at times when we have been in troubled places.’
