‘Morbius’ trailer: Jared Leto’s vampire is out for blood

Jared Leto is out for blood.

In a trailer for the vampire flick “Morbius,” released by Sony Pictures Monday, the 48-year-old Oscar winner (“Dallas Buyers Club”) plays Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disorder looking for a cure that involves interacting with a slew of bats. We know where this is headed.

“How far are we allowed to go to fix something that’s broken?” he asks in voiceover before infecting himself with a form of vampirism that gives him super speed, strength — there will be shirtlessness and abs — and “an overpowering urge to consume blood.”

The upshot? “I feel I’m more alive than ever,” proclaims a post-experiment Morbius. Drink up, Jared!

This isn’t Leto’s first foray into comic book fandom, of course: He played the Joker in 2016’s “Suicide Squad.” A proposed solo film involving his version of the laughing villain was scrapped, according to Forbes. (Your job is safe, Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix.)

The character Morbius first appeared as a villain in the Spider-Man comic books in the 1970s but evolved into an antihero in subsequent iterations. His emergence in the film is part of an effort to bring other Marvel characters to the big screen, such as Venom, played by Tom Hardy in 2018 with a sequel set for release in October.

The cast of “Morbius,” directed by Daniel Espinosa (“Child 44”), also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, Michael Keaton, J.K. Simmons and Tyrese Gibson.
