  • Said the pair hit it off instantly and praised her warm, open Californian nature
  • Styled Meghan’s wedding reception ‘messy updo’ and 2018 tour of Australasia
  • Said was important to make her look ‘accessible and like a people’s princess’

The British hairdresser behind some of Meghan Markle’s most iconic looks has told how he endeavoured to make her look like a ‘people’s princess’ with ‘refined imperfection’ styles – and praised the ‘intimate’ relationship she and Prince Harry enjoyed with their team.

George Northwood, 41, from London, has worked with the Duchess of Sussex, 38, for the past two years.

He was responsible for her chic wedding reception ‘messy bun’ in May 2018 and all 40 of her looks on her and Harry’s 2018 tour of Australia, New Zealand, Figi and Tonga.

Yesterday, on the day the couple officially stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family, he shared an Instagram post in which he described working with them as an ‘enormous privilege’ and ‘a lot of fun’.

‘I have enjoyed every minute collaborating with this amazing couple who not only champion small businesses but have taught me so much about diversity, equality and the importance of good mental health,’ he wrote, sharing a few of his favourite Meghan looks.

‘Harry, Meghan and Archie, wishing you much love and luck for your next exciting chapter! Can’t wait to see you one day soon – and so happy to now be able to share about our special time together.’

Speaking to The Telegraph, George told how he and the duchess hit it off immediately, praising her laid-back Californian way.

When it came to her hair George, who has previously worked with A-listers like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Gwyneth Paltrow, he said it was important to keep Meghan’s look ‘modern’ as well as regal.

‘We had to make sure we ticked all the boxes, but then we wanted to make her look accessible and like a people’s princess that everyone relates to,’ he said.

He described her and Harry as ‘such a strong partnership’, adding: ‘I became so close to them both… they are so grounded, they’re inspirational and there’s no ego on their part.’

Though the couple travel with a big team, George said it remains ‘personal and intimate’. He insisted whoever gets to work with them in the future is ‘really lucky’.

His remarks appear to contradict previous reports that Meghan was ‘difficult and demanding’ with staff.

Speaking to British Vogue, George said Meghan approached things like an ‘everyday woman’.

‘She has a real sense of style and she wanted to look approachable, even though she was a princess,’ he explained.

‘She was a very modern princess, the sort of princess we can relate to and aspire to, and the hair just fell into that.’

When he joined the couple on their tour of Australasia, George and Meghan planned about 50 per cent of her looks, with the rest being ‘organic’.

He told how the duchess would calm him if he became flustered, telling him to ‘breathe’ – but though he was nervous, he always had ‘real empathy’ for his client.

George also revealed the thought and ‘mindful vision’ which Meghan put into planning her outfits and jewellery.

‘I always remember, wherever we went, she would always try to hero small businesses and local jewellery designers,’ George told The Telegraph.

‘When we were in Australia she would pull out such thoughtful things when we were getting ready, like earrings by a little New Zealand jewellery designer. The hair just needed to fit in and feel comfortable.’

Speaking to British Vogue, George said she ‘puts so much thought into everything’ and ‘really has your back and supports small businesses’.

For George, the thing he ‘loved the most’ about styling Meghan’s hair was the opportunity to create the image of a mixed-race woman who has become someone girls would look up to.

‘We made Cali girl hair a bit more formal and had a real laugh,’ he recalled.

Meghan and Harry are currently living in LA, having flown there with Archie from Canada last week before the borders closed due to coronavirus.

The pair shared their final post on the Sussex Royal Instagram account on March 30, ahead of officially stepping down as working senior royals.

Yesterday royal expert Camilla Tominey claimed the couple have put all plans to rebrand ‘on ice’ amid the pandemic crisis.

They were rumoured to be revealing their new brand and charity this week, with Instagram being their launch platform of choice.

However, appearing on This Morning, royal commentator Camilla claimed that all plans to ‘rebrand as celebrities’ have been put ‘on ice’.

She told the couple have decided against launching new projects at the moment, because they wouldn’t get the ‘column inches’ they wanted, as well as feeling it’s ‘inappropriate’ to rebrand at this time.
