A husband who lost his wedding ring on a remote Scottish beach four years ago has been reunited with the band after a girl spotted it in the sand.

Stuart Bell, from Stepps, North Lanarkshire, was visiting Machir Bay, in the Isle of Islay, with his wife Julie, 41, and son Lewis, now five, in 2015 when he first noticed his ring was missing.

But in July this year schoolgirl Carys MacMillan, eight, of Callander, Stirlingshire, spotted the ring while visiting the same beauty spot with her mother Karen on holiday.

Karen, 41, posted a picture of the band to a Facebook page for Islay locals, and it was soon noticed by Stuart, 44, who is originally from the island.

But miraculously, the father-of-one, from Stepps, North Lanarkshire, has been reunited with the band just in time for his 10th anniversary, thanks to Carys MacMillan (pictured)

The digger driver said: ‘We’re so grateful to Carys. With our tenth anniversary this week, it makes it even more special.’

Recalling the moment her daughter found the band, Karen told the Record: ‘Carys spotted what she thought was a bottle cap. She put it on her finger and said, “Look mum, I’m wearing a wedding ring”. I laughed it off till I realised what she had picked up.’

In a remarkable twist of fate, Karen turned out to be a friend of the family, with the teacher, who also grew up in Islay’s Port Charlotte, being best friends with Stuart’s sister, Catriona, 41.

After the youngster found the ring, her mother Karen, 41, posted a picture of the jewellery to a Facebook page (pictured) for Islay locals, and it was soon noticed by Stuart

Stuart’s large white gold band was engraved with S.B and J.B 050909, and Karen asked those who claimed the ring to state the date embellished upon it.

After contacting Karen on Facebook and confirming the date – which is when they got married – Stuart and Julie were in disbelief that the ring had been found.

The couple had always believed that the strong currents at the Hebridean island and the many tourists that visit the picturesque area would make finding the ring an impossible task.

Stuart said: ‘I was devastated when the ring disappeared. To think that my sister’s best friend’s daughter, who was only on Islay for a holiday, found it is crazy.

‘With our tenth anniversary this week, it makes it even more special and maybe it was fate.’
