Love Island viewers are not entirely convinced by Liam Reardon’s attempts to escape the doghouse with Millie Court after he played away in Casa Amour.

Liam’s clearly trying to show Millie, 24, that he’s sorry for cracking on with Lillie Haynes, 22, but he has a long way to go if he is to live up to the grand romantic gestures from previous series.

Liam sent Millie a photo of the two of them via text captioned ‘What a view’ only for Millie to return the image with Liam cropped out of it in Monday night’s episode .

Before bed, Liam left a note under Millie’s pillow that read: “I may not be sticking in your back in bed, but you’re always stuck in my head. XX”

While his grand finale was an epic speech describing Millie as his "soulmate", which resulted in her picking him in the recoupling ceremony.

Here are some of the successful romantic gestures from previous series of Love Island…

Puppy love for Luke and 'princess' Siânnise

Sixth series contestant Luke Trotman raised the bar for men everywhere as he concocted an elaborate plan to ask Disney lover Siânnise Fudge to be his girlfriend, enlisting the help of fellow islanders to create a princess-themed scavenger hunt.

Siânnise was given a princess crown made out of card and stick-on gems before being led through the villa, where she had to answer questions about their relationship.

Finally, Siânnise arrived at the sunbed where the couple had their second kiss, where Luke asked her to be his girlfriend.

He said: "Obviously, you've been a big part of my journey in the villa. And I want to show my intent outside the villa. So I want to ask you if you want to be my girlfriend."

This was one of the most romantic gestures in Love Island history because Luke behaved like a real Prince Charming, showing how much attention he had paid to Siânnise’s interests.

What’s more, the couple — who came second in the show — are still together, and they even bought a puppy together earlier this year.

Finley melts ‘ice queen’ Paige

Fellow sixth series contestant Finn Tapp didn’t shy away from grand romantic gestures either after famously melting ‘ice queen’ Paige Turley.

Paige, who dated pop singer Lewis Capaldi when she was a teenager, is no stranger to having songs written about her.

However, Finn opted for a romantic speech rather than a ballad upon returning to the villa from Casa Amour, as he asked Paige to be his girlfriend.

Finn said: “All I think now is what’s going to happen on the outside? The elephant in the room is the distance and there are going to be some challenges but I do want it to be something we face together. So will you be my girlfriend?”

A stunned Paige made Finn repeat himself as their fellow islanders cheered from the balcony before kissing Finn.

Still very much an item, Finn went to stay at Paige’s family home in West Lothian, Scotland, during lockdown one last year, and the couple have since moved into their own apartment in Manchester.

A poetic proposal from TOWIE’s Jon Clark

In the 2015 Love Island final, Jon Clark proposed to his glamour model girlfriend of five weeks, Hannah Elizabeth, who he had coupled up with from the very beginning of the series.

Jon read Hannah a poem he had written especially for the occasion which said: "Love is mad, love is crazy, love makes me feel like a daisy. Love is scary, love is cool though. Loving you makes me feel like a rainbow. Every day you give the horn and every day I feel like a newborn. My love for you is from the heart, even though I always fart. My love for you will never end, till the day I meet my end."

He then dropped down on one knee and asked Hannah if she would do him the honour of making him the happiest man alive by marrying him.

While the couple never made it down the aisle, Jon’s goofy proposal did make for fantastic television, raising the stakes as the contestants tried to show they were worthy of the series’ £50,000 prize.

Despite pulling out all the stops, Jon and Hannah ended up coming second to Jessica Hayes and Max Morley.

Stuffed with love: Tommy Fury cuddles up to ‘Elly-Belly’

Series five runner-up Tommy Fury tugged on heartstrings as he appeared clutching Molly-Mae Hague’s beloved elephant cuddly toy ‘Elly-Belly’ after returning from Casa Amour.

While holding a cuddly toy doesn’t seem like a grand romantic gesture on the surface, this moment meant a lot to Molly-Mae who later revealed in a Q&A thatthis was one of the factors that led her to realise that Tommy loved her deeply .

A fan asked: "When did you realise he loved you deeply?"

She said: "When he fell in love with my cuddly elephant just because of how much I loved it".

Molly-Mae and Tommy’s relationship is still going strong, with the couple celebrating their two-year anniversary in July.

Perhaps this is a sign of promising things to come for current Love Island contestant Teddy Soares, who also melted hearts recently in Unseen Bits, after he was seen chatting to Faye Winter’s stuffed animal while pining for the lettings manager in Casa Amor.

Faye and Teddy rekindled their romance upon Teddy’s return to the villa, both admitting fault for how they had handled their situation.
