A security guard was caught on film violently beating a shopper.

Supermarket Lidl launched an investigation after the security guard was caught repeatedly punching, kicking and stamping on a member of the public.

The clip was captured by a "shocked" shopper who witnessed the incident whilst walking through Stratford Shopping Centre in London at around 10pm on May 30.

In the video the guard appears to violently attack a man who can be seen trying to protect himself and get to his feet before passersby try to stop the scuffle.

One onlooker, a 25-year-old antique trader from Canary Wharf who asked not to be named, said: "He was getting a real beating.

"I'm sure a security guard should not be using that much force.

"I was so shocked. I felt like I had to do something but there was nothing I could have done.

"The way it was handled was appalling. It's way over the level of force I would expect to see from a guard.

"I saw excessive force being used for no reason."

After being knocked to the floor completely, the man moves into a doorway before being stamped on.

Store workers from Lidl and members of the public then appear to break up the scuffle.

The supermarket said the guard is now no longer working for them and launched an investigation into the attack.

A spokesperson for Stratford Shopping Centre confirmed the incident involved a security guard who was working at Lidl.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "We were shocked and appalled by this incident and sincerely apologise to anyone involved.

"Under no circumstances do we condone or tolerate behaviour of this nature, and we can confirm that Lidl is no longer working with this individual.

"We have alerted the police to the matter and will support them in any way possible.

"A thorough internal investigation has also been launched alongside our external security provider, to ensure that full and appropriate action is taken."

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at around 22:05hrs on Thursday, 30 May to reports of an assault outside of a shop on The Mall, Newham.

"A man alleged he had been the victim of an attack by a security guard after being refused entry to the store.

"Investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made."
