A lad allergic to horses has defied the odds to become a top jockey.

Harrison Shaw loved racehorses but being near them caused eczema and sores all over his body.

But a miracle drug trial turned his life around and let him pursue his dream.

Harrison, 23, who has now ridden 39 winners, said: “I’ve had allergic reactions all my life, not just with horses, with dogs, cats, bark, pollen and trees.

"It’s an awful thing as they are all around you, but much worse if your dream job is to be a jockey.

“I struggled with it a lot when I was younger and got to a point when I was in hospital most of the time and couldn’t really start race riding until about three years ago.”

Harrison, of Easingwold, North Yorks, began his remarkable change four years ago after parents Andy and Debbie heard about allergy research and made sure their son was given the chance to join trials of the drug Dupilumab.

Within six weeks he was an apprentice jockey.
