I’m desperate for a gym membership but mum won’t let dad pay for one – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: MUM won’t let Dad pay for my gym membership. I’m 16 and hate my body. Dad was never in my life until a year ago but he is trying to make up for lost time.

He left Mum when I was two. Now we are back in touch and he is trying to help Mum financially but she always refuses.

She says: “We’ve managed this long. Why do we need his help now?” She said: “Your body is fine. Eat more vegetables and do an exercise DVD.”

My friends are going to join the gym but Mum just says no to me joining because Dad would be involved.

DEIDRE SAYS: I understand why your mum feels angry about your dad walking back into your lives after she has shouldered all the hard work of raising you alone.

Explain to her you understand that too – that your dad can’t buy your love but he is still your dad and their conflict isn’t your conflict.

Ask her to reconsider her position.

If she is reluctant, some gyms allow a walk-in charge, rather than signing up to a monthly contract.
