‘I had hair transplant to reduce the size of my forehead – and I’m not ashamed’

A woman with a "big forehead" revealed her transformation after she underwent a hair transplant.

Sonja van der Berg, 33, from the Netherlands, decided to undergo the treatment after years of worry about her high hairline.

Since her teens, the management assistant has always been aware of her appearance and would make sure her hair was concealing her insecurity.

She even struggled in the wind as she was afraid her tresses would "expose" her forehead.

After having enough of her attempts to hide her hairline, Sonja started to search online what treatment was available.

She finally settled on a hair transplant that cost €3,000 (£2,641) and now feels more confident than ever after the six-hour procedure.

The transplant enthusiast now wants to "break the taboo" of women receiving the treatment – and hopes to show that you shouldn't be ashamed of it.

Sonja said: "I had always wanted to get a hair transplant done because my high hairline always bothered me.

"Last year, I started to Google ways to make the forehead smaller but I knew a forehead reduction operation would be too drastic for me."

At first, Sonja didn't realise hair transplants were for women – and not just for men.

She admitted she was "surprised" the treatment could not only help women with hair loss but with larger foreheads.

Excited at the possibility the procedure could hold, Sonja contacted several clinics and was thrilled when told she had enough 'donor hair' to go ahead.

The hairs found at the back of her head were inserted into her scalp one by one to build the illusion of a smaller forehead.

Although she experienced some swelling after the surgery, which she was completely numb, on day 5 she felt "back to normal".

As soon as Sonja looked in the mirror, she fell in 'love' with the transformation.

"It's so subtle most people don't even notice it," she admitted.

"But it made a huge impact on my self confidence which crazy.

"Before I always had this feeling of being naked somehow, on my face, and now it feels how it's supposed to be.

"I love the results already.

"I can wear my hair in different styles I want to now that I wasn't able to before."

For the aftercare of the surgery, Sonja has to brush her new hair vigorously. This is so the blood flow is stimulated enough to remove the hair grafts.

Now 10 months on from her life-changing time on the operating table, Sonja wants to give other women the confidence to go ahead.

She documented the process throughout her hair journey in order to capture the reality of the treatment and the aftermath of it.

In light of her success, Sonja set up a business to help other women who want to pursue a hair transplant. She even accompanies them to Istanbul to get theirs done.

Sonja – who got her transplant done in the Netherlands – already joined two women on their journey to Istanbul, which is known as the 'hair transplant capital of the world'.

She also advised another 15 women who are planning to go to Turkey for their treatment later this year.

"I got so many messages from women saying they also have the same insecurity and they're very shy and feel ashamed of their hairlines and foreheads," Sonja revealed.

"Why should you feel ashamed about it? So I thought if I put this out there I can help a lot of people.

"By embracing these insecurities you can do something about them which is better in the end for everyone.

"The more the more women can show this the better.

"We all know that for men it's very common but also for women there's nothing to be ashamed about."

Sonja continued: "By sharing information about this, women who have the same insecurity will finally be able to do something about it if they want.

"It's their choice in the end of course.

"It's OK to show yourself in a more fragile less 'Insta-perfect' way.

"It's truly important to put out that we're not perfect.

"And you shouldn't want to be perfect, but this could help you to feel beautiful."
