Dandruff can be embarrassing and irritating. No one wants to be itching their dry scalp all day only to have flakes of dead skin flying everywhere. If you suffer from a flaky scalp, don’t stress! There are plenty of ways to calm down dandruff. Express.co.uk reveals how to get rid of a flaky scalp.
Dandruff is a common skin condition and is nothing to worry about.
The condition causes your scalp to feel dry and itchy, and it is worse when you’re stressed or the weather is colder.
Dandruff isn’t caused by poor hygiene, it’s caused by a microbe that occurs on the scalp called Malassezia Globosa.
Only 50 percent of people will get dandruff because of it though.

According to the experts at Head & Shoulders, Malassezia globosa feeds on the natural scalp oils called sebum.
This produces a byproduct called oleic acid, which one in two of us are sensitive to.
Irritation occurs on the scalp of those who are sensitive to oleic acid, and the scalp starts to become inflamed, red and itchy.
Your body then tells the brain to shed this skin faster than usual and these flakes fall off your scalp and onto your shoulders.
How to get rid of flaky scalp
While dandruff is a naturally-occurring condition, you can treat it at home and control the factors that make it worse.
For starters, start using an anti-dandruff shampoo such as one by Head & Shoulders or one of the other readily available products in pharmacies or supermarkets.
You’ll need to make sure the shampoo contains zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, selenium sulphide (or selenium sulfide), ketoconazole, or coal tar.
If it doesn’t, it probably won’t help to control your dandruff.

You should also avoid too much hot, dry air near your scalp.
This means limiting staying away from saunas and heaters. .
Even though it’s cold outside, steer clear of wearing a big woolly hat because hats create the perfect microclimate for the microbes to thrive.
Stress can cause dandruff to flare up, so try to meditate and do yoga to keep cortisol levels down.
Head & Shoulders recommends washing your hair three times a week with your anti-dandruff shampoo.
Even if your dandruff has disappeared, keep using the shampoo because it is a recurring condition.
Whatever you do, don’t scratch your scalp! This damages the skin and can make it more visible.
When your skin feels irritated, press your fingers on your scalp to ease the sensation.
Hair care brand Chāmpo recommends using their Kapha shampoo which uses the Tumeric root to tone the scalp.
Simply leave it on for a few minutes and then wash it out to reveal a flake-free and clean scalp.
Chāmpo’s experts also recommended showering with cool water.
They said: “As tempting as it is, avoid starting the day with a too-hot shower.
“Not only can this strip natural moisture, but it also encourages over-production of oil and sweat on the scalp, which can leave behind flakes and irritation.
“Whether before your shower or while you wash, massaging your scalp daily for 10-minutes has a remarkable effect on hair; stimulating blood flow to the follicles which in turn boosts hair and the scalp’s health, growth and thickness.”
