How to clean a shower head

If your shower’s water flow is weak and you’re sure it has nothing to do with the water pressure, it could be down to limescale. While limescale is harmless to humans, it is an eyesore and can block up your showerhead. Express.co.uk reveals how to clean a shower head.

If you see limescale on your shower head, you may have a problem.

Limescale isn’t just unappealing, it can cause the flow in your shower to be sporadic and muted.

If you can see limescale on your shower head, it’s probably lodged inside the head too.

This can cause blocked ducts, which reduces the flow of water.

You don’t need to buy a new shower head as soon as you spot a bit of limescale.

You can easily clean your showerhead and improve the flow with just a few steps.

All you need is some white vinegar, a sponge, and an old toothbrush.

To avoid limescale build up in the first place, make sure you remove the shower head once a month and rinse the inside.

You should also dry off your showerhead after every shower with a towel.

How to clean a shower head

Victorian Plumbing has revealed how to clean shower heads.

If you have a handheld shower head, remove it and unscrew it.

You should find a small rubber washer within the hose connector, put this to the side and keep it safe for now.

Place the shower head in the sink and submerge it in white vinegar.

Make sure you use white vinegar and not malt vinegar or cider vinegar.

Leave it to soak for half an hour to break down the limescale deposits.

Remove the shower head and drain the skin, and then rinse the shower head in cool fresh water.

Use the tap water to spray away any limescale that is stuck inside the handset.

Take a clean sponge and scrub away stubborn bits of limescale.

Then, get an old toothbrush and brush away any blockages within the nubs on the face.

They should flake away easily and then you can polish the unit with a soft cloth.

If you have an overhead shower that is mounted on the ceiling or wall, this is a little more difficult to clean.

Fill a strong plastic bag with some white vinegar and securely attach it to your shower head with elastic bands or duct tape.

Make sure the bag is full enough to submerge the shower head.

Leave the bag around the shower head for half an hour before removing it.

Then, take a sponge and toothbrush and scrub away the remaining chunks of limescale.
