Get fit during the Olympics with British sprinter Adam Gemili's tips

07/23/2021

OLYMPIC fever is here – and I’ll be watching as much of the Tokyo Games as I can.

I was lucky enough to chat to British sprinter Adam Gemili, who will be competing in the Men’s 200m, before he left for Japan.

He has some great tips if your family wants to get healthy this summer. Adam says . . .

YOU DON’T NEED TO SPEND A LOT: I totally get that people are busy with work or stuck at home right now. But you don’t need any fancy equipment and you don’t need a gym membership to get fit.

I actually started a fitness page last summer called @adamgemili_fitness on Instagram, and I’ve posted free workouts that I do on there. I’m concentrating on the Games for now, but it’s something I want to do more of in the future.

It’s not just an athlete’s responsibility to run faster, we should be inspiring kids because otherwise we could lose the next generation of great athletes.

GET INSPIRED BY WATCHING LIVE: If you enjoy watching it on TV, imagine what it’s like in real life. I just competed in the Muller Anniversary Games a few weeks ago and there’s so many activities families can get involved with when going to watch live sport. It’s so inclusive. Keep an eye on britishathletics.org.uk for events near you.

JUST HAVE A GO FOR FREE: I was playing football before I got into sprinting. Try something, see if you like it and go from there. There are loads of free community clubs out there.

ACCEPT THAT SETBACKS HAPPEN: When the news came through that Tokyo 2020 wasn’t happening last year, I tried to put on a brave face but it really affected me.

You train so hard, you put so much effort in, you’re in the shape of your life, eating right, sleeping right and then your main purpose gets taken away.

But it made me realise that you should just work hard to be the best person you can be and accept setbacks will happen. You can always get up and go again!

…AND HERE ARE MY HEALTH HELPERS

  • Check your local council website for info about free activities in your area. There are lots of free trials for athletics. As Adam says, we need to find future winners.
  • Search online marketplaces such as Gumtree for free sports equipment. There’s plenty listed as people clear out after lockdown
  • Use trial days at your local gym to have a go at new classes. If you talk to staff, you can usually get a freebie.
  • With the Games on now, check food packaging for sports offers. For example, KP Snacks is running everyonein.co.uk where you can win event tickets and get involved in free sporting challenges.
