French aristocrat ‘who murdered wife and 4 kids’ had ‘secret life’ in Scotland

A French aristocrat suspected of murdering his wife and four children before disappearing without trace remarried and lived secretly in Scotland for almost nine years, it is claimed.

The astonishing claims emerged after Glasgow police arrested a man thought to be Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès when he arrived at the Scottish city’s airport on Friday afternoon.

The 58-year-old had not previously been seen since shortly after the slaughter in April 2011.

He allegedly went on the run after the bodies of Agnes, 49, and children Tomas, 21, Arthur, 18, Anne, 16, and Benoit, 13, were found buried in the garden of the family house in Nantes, western France, along with their two pet Labradors, Jules and Léon.

There were claims he had radically changed his appearance through plastic surgery.

Now a female witness involved in the case has told the Ouest France newspaper that De Ligonnès started a new life in Scotland.

"A very reliable source specifies that the fugitive had even remarried in Great Britain," the newspaper reports.

There was no indication as to whether this information had been passed on to the police, it adds.

Scottish police said the "digital fingerprint" of a man who landed in Glasgow on eastJet flight U26884 at 2.30pm on Friday corresponded to that of De Ligonnès.

He was allegedly using a passport stolen in 2014 belonging to a man called Guillaume Joao.

Mr Joao’s home in Limay, 40 miles of Paris, was raided by police.

But a French investigating source said: "Mr Joao looks nothing like De Ligonnès, and nor was the man who was arrested in Glasgow.

"It may be that De Ligonnès has radically disguised himself over the years, but there are still lots of questions to be answered.

"The digital fingerprint identification was only partial – that’s why French forensics experts are on their way to Glasgow. DNA tests are already in progress."
