Fantasy Football: Who makes the Team of the Year based on points?

Nearly all football questions can be answered by fantasy football.

So while the PFA Team of the Year stirred a lot of debate among you, let us tell you the real team of the year so far going by Dream Team points.

We’re going by all the same parameters as the PFA, we’ll use a 4-3-3 formation and will pick defenders in their correct positions, three midfielders and three attackers.

You might be surprised at a few of these faces…

GK David De Gea – 158pts

Man United’s human brick wall De Gea has been without doubt the best keeper in the league.

Of the 40 games he’s played in all competitions this season he’s kept a clean sheet in 50%.

Say no more.

RB Kyle Walker – 163pts

Walker has been a relentless tyro down City’s right flank all season and he’s been as much an attacking outlet as he has defensive cover.

He gets into the fantasy team of the year (so far) by the skin of his teeth, just one point ahead of Cesar Azpilicueta – this battle will go down to the wire.

CB Nicolas Otamendi – 215pts

Much like the rest of the City backline Otamendi has been tasked with becoming part of the attacking unit as well as the last line of defence.

Consistently picking up those sweet points throughout the season, Otamendi is the highest scoring defender in the game.

CB Chris Smalling – 182pts

Take those looks of disbelief off your faces.

Smalling is the second highest scoring defender in the game and you can put that down to two reasons.

First up is Jose Mourinho’s love for a clean sheet and secondly after scoring just once in 101 games for United, the centre back has now notched three times in his last three away games.

The stats don’t lie people.

LB Marcos Alonso – 181pts

When we saw the PFA Team of the Year we questioned whether Alonso had been that impressive this season, but then we tried to name a better LB.

Now we can relax knowing that the fantasy football super computer backs up his team of the year selection.

181 points from a defender in a team that is sitting in fifth and has lost nine league games is very impressive.

MID Mo Salah – 373pts

Salah has been a revelation since signing from Roma in the summer.

40 goals and 11 assists this season says it all and the nicest man in football deserves all the plaudits he is getting.

Salah has posted 16 double figure hauls as well as a top score of 35 points in one game against Watford.

His price has risen from £4m to £11m – we are not worthy.

MID Kevin De Bruyne – 268 points

Ginger Prince, Orange Wizard, the better looking Zinchenko, whatever you call him De Bruyne has been out of this world this season.

With Salah in midfield too, KDB has been the best of the rest with 268 points from 48 games.

If assists are your kind of thing, he is the man – leading the assist charts with 15 – De Bruyne had been a playmaking points machine all season.

Rightly taking his place in the PFA and Dream Team TOTY.

MID Eden Hazard – 250 points

Despite Chelsea having their weird post-success season Hazard has once again been a class apart.

The diminutive Belgian has almost single-handedly kept Chelsea in the running for a Champions League place and his points tally reflects that.

Scoring higher than Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane and Christian Eriksen you have to hand it to Hazard for another great season.

Take that PFA.

PLAY DREAM TEAM WEEKENDER Pick seven players to win £5k!

ATT Sergio Aguero – 277pts

This one was definitely up for debate in the subjective PFA TOTY, but here at Dream Team we deal in cold hard fantasy points.

Aguero is third in the Premier League goal charts behind Kane and Salah with 21 goals and, as you know, goals mean points.

Remember those four goals against Leicester back in GW24? 33 points in the bag.

Sadly Aguero will likely slip out of this team as he’s been ruled out for the season with injury.

ATT Harry Kane – 347pts

Until Kane picked up his injury it looked for all the world like he was nailed on to win the golden boot.

Kane scored 20+ points five times before GW18 which demonstrates just how good he’s been this season.

Kane got back  in the goals at Brighton but in his four games before that he managed just seven points.

Still definitely deserves his spot in both teams.

ATT Roberto Firmino – 258pts

Ah, Bobby Firmino, the player who is proving value isn’t everything.

Punching well above his weight at a cost of just £6.7million, Firmino is the third highest-scoring striker in the game.

Costing nearly £3million less than Aguero, Firmino has registered only 19 points less than City’s front man.

He’s also been a delight to watch all season.
