Expert reveal how the way you're sleeping could be damaging your skin

Is YOUR sleep position making you look older? Expert reveals how lying on your stomach or resting your face on your hand causes wrinkles and spots

We all know the benefits that a good nights sleep can do to your health – but what about the damage it could be causing?  

From lying on your front, to touching your face with bacteria on your hands, experts have revealed how the way you sleep could be causing damage to your skin.  

Nurse Jamie founder, Jamie Sherrill, told The Telegraph that sleeping on your front was the ‘worst position’, while sleeping on your side could also increase wrinkles down the cheeks and chin.

Meanwhile Dr Marwa Ali, of the Wellness Clinic at Harrods, revealed how to avoid wrinkles forming in the chest. 

Experts have revealed how your sleeping position could be ageing your skin, and suggested ways in which you can minimise the damage, including sleeping on your back

How to avoid…facial wrinkles

The mistake: Sherill explained that sleeping on your stomach with your face ‘smashed’ into the pillow was the worst position to sleep in.

He suggested it reinforced ‘vertical expression wrinkles around the lips and between the brows’.

Meanwhile sleeping on your side is not much better, increasing vertical creases down the cheeks and chin.

How to fix it: The ultimate way to reduce sleep wrinkles is to minimise facial contact with your pillow.

Instead, sleep on your back and try to avoid pushing your face into the pillow.

This position will also leave you waking up looking less puffy, as it allows fluids in your skin to drain more effectively. 

How to avoid…creases in the skin

Dr Marwa Ali, of the Wellness Clinic at Harrods, suggested folding a pair of long socks between your breasts in order to prevent folds from forming down the décolleté

The mistake: Not only does sleeping on your side leave your cheeks and chin at risk of wrinkles, it can also increase vertical creases down your décolleté.

It encourages lines and wrinkles that the area doesn’t have enough natural collagen to support.

Dr Marwa Ali, of the Wellness Clinic at Harrods, said that by sleeping on your side, the breasts are pushed together, causing folds to form.

In time, these would result in long lasting wrinkles. 

How to fix it: Dr Marwa Ali, of the Wellness Clinic at Harrods, suggested there was an unlikely way to keep the chest area wrinkle-free and delicate.

He said: ‘The easiest, low-cost method is a simple pair of socks.’

How to avoid…breakouts and rashes 

The mistake: Throughout the day our hands are constantly exposed to bacteria, whether that’s at home, on the commute, or in the office.

And in bed, many people make the mistake of touching their faces in the night, or rest their face on their hands while they sleep – which is actually incredibly unhygienic. 

Dr Ali pointed to people using their phone in bed, and said bacteria was ‘guaranteed’ to transfer from phone to skin. 

He went on to suggest it could lead to breakouts and rashes.

How to fix it: Dr Ali shared: ‘It’s important to ensure you wash your hands before bed and sterilise your phone with a wipe too.’
