Even Lena Heady Says She "Wanted a Better Death" For Cersei on Game of Thrones

The final season of Game of Thrones was met with divisive reactions among fans, but even some of the actors weren’t completely happy with how things wrapped. Case in point: Lena Headey, who portrayed Cersei Lannister, recently opened up to The Guardian about her character’s death and how her ultimate fate was a bit of a let-down. As a refresher, Cersei — who spends all eight seasons being relentless, conniving, and power-hungry — dies in the arms of her brother-lover Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) as the walls and ceiling of the Red Keep coming crashing down on them while Daenerys Targaryen goes full-on Mad Queen in King’s Landing.

“I will say I wanted a better death,” Headey told The Guardian. “Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.” Back in May, the actress also told Entertainment Weekly that she initially had a “mixed” reaction to the scene, adding, “I wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody.” But she eventually accepted how Cersei’s doom plays out.

Many viewers were displeased with the denouement, believing Cersei deserved a more painful or fitting end (i.e., dying at the hands of Arya Stark). But that was just one of the many gripes had with the show’s final installment. Over one million people have even signed a Change.org petition to have the entire eighth season remade. It’s definitely not the ending many hoped for, but at least we have plenty of fun behind-the-scenes photos to remind us how much we love the cast (despite any bleats about the show’s conclusion).
