Ellen DeGeneres thanks ‘husband Mark’ at Golden Globes 2020

Say, Ellen, we thought you were married to Portia de Rossi. Who’s Mark?

During her acceptance speech for the Carol Burnett Award at the 2020 Golden Globes, an overjoyed Ellen DeGeneres, 61, spoofed conventional speeches of this nature by thanking her “husband Mark” and a couple of kids at home.

Many viewers took to social media to register their confusion. Of course, DeGeneres has been married to actress de Rossi, 46, for 11 years — and they own multiple homes together — so she was just poking fun at the awards show trope of heterosexual winners thanking the families without which they couldn’t have achieved their showbiz accomplishments.

“Obviously, you all know me or you wouldn’t have laughed at that,” DeGeneres said, paying homage to her comedic inspiration Burnett, who she grew up watching on TV on Saturday nights.

“I felt like I knew her — she never let us down,” the three-time Golden Globe nominee said of Burnett. “I always felt like she was speaking to me.”

The Carol Burnett Award was introduced during 2019’s ceremony, with its namesake receiving the inaugural accolade. Chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association board of directors, the award is considered the TV equivalent of the organization’s Cecil B. DeMille award for excellence in film.

“From her sitcoms, to stand-up, to becoming a household staple on daytime television, she is a pioneer who has captivated audiences for nearly 25 years with her undeniable charm and wit,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria told Variety of DeGeneres. “In addition to her television success, she’s an advocate and philanthropist, lending her voice to those who don’t have one, and spreading kindness and joy through the power of her platform. We look forward to celebrating her achievements at this year’s ceremony.”

It wasn’t all jokes, though. DeGeneres — who is a devoted advocate for animals — launched her acceptance speech on a serious note saying, “Australia, I love you. My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering in Australia, all the animals that we’ve lost.”
