Edward Enninful has praised the Duchess Of Sussex for being an ‘inspirational woman of action’ and dubbed her a ‘bi-racial powerhouse’ in Vogue editor’s letter.

Meghan Markle, 37, has become the first person ever to guest edit a September issue of British Vogue, which is released on August 2.

Enninful, who has been the editor-in-chief of the magazine for the last two years, told how he has always had ‘profound respect’ for the Duchess – before discussing why he thinks she is the ultimate force for change.

Speaking on a personal note, he wrote: ‘I can’t overstate how much it meant to me to see HRH The Duke of Sussex marry this brilliant, bi-racial, American powerhouse.’

‘I simply never imagined that, in my lifetime, someone of my colour would – or could – enter the highest echelons of our Royal Family.’

He went on to commend the former Suits actress’ approach to her new role which has thrown her into Britain’s public life, and the way she has dealt with first-time motherhood.

‘From her hands-on approach to transforming women’s lives at (which she writes about in this issue), to the variety of her broader charity commitments, she bears all the hallmarks of a true activist,’ he added.

Back in January, Enninful revealed he was enjoying a holiday in the Austrian mountains when he received a message from ‘M.’

Describing the content as ‘warm, purposeful and to the point,’ he was delighted when he realised the sender was Meghan Markle.

Speaking of Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, Enninful said: ‘I simply never imagined that, in my lifetime, someone of my colour would – or could – enter the highest echelons of our Royal Family.’ Pictured, the royal wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 19 May 2018

After telling him she thinks they have lots in common, the Duchess asked him to meet up.

Just a week later, a nervous Enninful headed to meet the then heavily pregnant Duchess for tea in London.

He told how the two had an ‘instant connection’ and spoke about her projects with Smart Works and how the magazine might be able to support them.

After leaving feeling inspired, Enninful then received a text message from Meghan asking whether she could co-edit a special issue to highlight female changemakers – including those who have made a positive impact in recent times and are set to do so in the future.

Speaking of her request, he wrote: ‘From activists to artists, prime ministers to climate change campaigners, we would gather faces from the front lines of fashion, film, technology, wellness and beyond to celebrate a special moment in time – and to ask the question: “What’s next?”

Enninful went on to explain that in the guest editor’s letter, the Duchess of Sussex, introduces her work in her own words and even commissioned husband, Prince Harry, to interview Jane Goodall to help readers discover how the world can be treated better.

‘You will find evidence of her influence everywhere: from interviewing Michelle Obama, to spotlighting her charity Smart Works, and penning an introduction to a favourite poem – Matt Haig’s “A note from the beach,” he said.
