Kelsey Grammer’s character, Dr. Frasier Crane, is one of the most recognizable television characters of all time. While most people are aware that Frasier was created on CheersGrammer spent more time portraying the iconic character on his own wildly popular spinoff. The character of Dr. Frasier Crane first appeared in Cheers

Grammer first appeared as Frasier in Cheers in the season 3 premiere. In the episode, “Rebound Part 1”, Diane Chambers brings Frasier into the bar to help Sam Malone after he starts drinking in response to his and Diane’s breakup. Frasier and Diane had met after Diane checked herself into an inpatient treatment facility. 

Initially, Grammer was only supposed to appear on the series for a few episodes, but his chemistry with the cast and his acting ability earned him a promotion, according to Ken Levine. By the time Cheers went off the air, Grammer had appeared in 203 of the show’s 273 episodes. 

Dr. Frasier Crane and Dr. Lilith Sternin Crane made an appearance in Wings

Before securing his own show, Grammer’s character made an appearance on another successful NBC series. Frasier and his wife, Dr. Lilith Sternin-Crane, appeared on Wings in 1992. In the season 3 episode, Frasier and Lilith land in Nantucket to give a seminar. Helen ruins the seminar by claiming Frasier destroyed her life when he told her to leave Nantucket. 

Wings was another hit television show on NBC. It premiered in 1990 and ran for eight seasons on the network. Grammer only ever appeared on a single episode as Dr. Crane. After his 1992 appearance, the character was moved to his own spinoff. Wings aired its finale in 1997. 

Finally, Dr. Crane appeared in Frasier

After the success of the character, Grammer was offered his own spinoff. In the series, Frasier leaves Boston after his marriage to Lilith falls apart. Returning home to Seattle, Frasier has to figure out how to reintegrate with his family, interact with them in a new, much closer way, and start an entirely different career path. 

The series is considered one of the most successful television spinoffs of all time. During its 11 seasons, Frasier was nominated for more than 100 Emmy Awards and won 32 statues. The actors behind the beloved series are on board for a reunion, too. However, it will look much different than the original show. John Mahoney, the actor who portrayed Martin Crane, Frasier and Niles’s father, died in 2018.
