The pair have been inseparable since the Indian greater one-horned calf arrived at Chester Zoo a fortnight ago.

The baby, fathered by Beni, was delivered at 7st 12lb with just a hint of that horn, following Asha’s 16-month pregnancy.

Rhino boss Sam Harley said: “Despite their size, this species has a really soft side. Mum and calf have been side by side, bonding.”

The public can pick the cub’s name on the zoo’s Facebook page from Thuli, a Nepal river, Jiya, the Indian word for sunshine, and Bahula – “star”.
