The Countess of Wessex looked solemn as she joined the senior royals for the vigil at St Giles’ Cathedral tonight, with royal fans praising her ‘dignity’ despite the painful situation. 

All four of Her Majesty’s children stood guard around her coffin this evening in a poignant evening vigil in Edinburgh.

Sophie, 57, joined the Queen’s Consort at the vigil and was pictured sitting next to Camilla, looking sombre.

Social media users were quick to share their heartfelt words of support for Sophie, who enjoyed a particularly close relationship with her mother-in-law the Queen. 

One tweeted: ‘All four of them showed great dignity. Feel for Sophie Wessex too, she looks totally broken.’

Another posted: ‘My heart goes out to Princess Anne and Sophie Wessex who are, obviously, so broken loosing their Mum and Mother in Law…’

A third added: ‘Heartbreaking to see Sophie, Countess of Wessex clearly and visibly upset. 

‘She seems like such a warm, loving, caring and wonderful woman who is just devastated by her loss, I really think her & Edward should be given more high profile roles, so graceful & dignified.’

The Duke of York kept his eyes closed for a period of time during the 20-minute vigil, while the Princess Royal and Earl of Wessex had their eyes fixed towards the floor. 

King Charles, who appeared to be teary-eyed at times, kept his hands joined and also looked towards the floor as members of the public filed past.

Members of the public – who have been filing past the coffin in their thousands throughout the afternoon – were briefly held back to allow the royals to take their place.

The Countess of Wessex remained strong for her husband and family. She wore a black high neck dress paired with a black head piece 

Members of the royal family present at today’s service, which included the King and Queen Consort, all sat next to each other, with Sophie standing on the end 

Sophie looked sombre as she joined her fellow royals for the 1,200 year procession, which took place in sunshine 

However, they continued to file past once the vigil began, offering them an extraordinary perspective on the historic moment.

A number of members of the public bowed as they passed the King, with others walking solemnly by with heads down.   

Earlier on in the day Sophie again joined the Queen’s Consort in a fleet of cars as the Queen’s children walked behind the hearse carrying the Queen to St Giles’ Cathedral this afternoon, ahead of a service of thanksgiving.

Wearing a black suit and a matching headpiece, Sophie looked sombre as she joined her fellow royals for the deeply solemn 1,200 yard procession, which took place in bright sunshine, with hundreds of well-wishers lining the city’s oldest streets.

Following the Queen’s Piper, King Charles, in full military regalia, lead his siblings on foot including the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex and the Princess Royal – while the Queen Consort and other members of the monarchy followed in cars.

Sophie was seen entering St Giles, standing very close to her husband, who was wearing his military uniform and titles for the sombre occasion. 

Tomorrow the Queen’s coffin will make its final journey to London.
