Cleaning products that help stop coronavirus germs that you can buy from shops like B&M and Poundland – The Sun

BASIC household cleaning products that help prevent the spread of coronavirus are available for as little as 39p from discounters like B&M and Poundland.

Experts advise that the same measures that help stop the spreading of colds and flu will also help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Studies have shown that disinfectants and bleaches containing ethanol, hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite are most effective as they virtually destroy all of the virus' pathogenic particles.

Professor Sally Bloomfield of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine previously explained to The Sun that these chemicals are often found in supermarket cleaning products, such as bleach and alcohol-based items.

A bleach with a concentration of around 0.5 per cent will be enough to help rid your home of coronavirus germs.

And if you’re looking for an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, you want one that contains somewhere between 62 per cent and 80 per cent alcohol – anything less is not as effective.

"It can be very difficult to find out the concentrations of ingredients in cleaning products, and how effective they are" she told The Sun.

Household bleaches, both thick and thin, for domestic use typically has a concentration of 4.5 to 5 per cent.

Meanwhile bleach-based wipes and sprays tend to have been diluted and are already at around 0.5 per cent meaning that you don't have to spend a fortune on keeping your home clean.

Using the products to wipe down surfaces such as door handles, kitchen sides and stair banisters won't completely protect you from getting ill, but it will reduce the risk of you catching it at home.

These types of products are available to buy from bargain stores like B&M and Poundland, although it's worth noting that sometimes you can actually get cheaper versions by heading to a supermarket.

And remember, you'll need to go to a B&M or Poundland store to get your hands on the deals as neither retailer offers a delivery service.

Easy bleach citrus, B&M – 39p

This 750ml bottle of toilet bleach only costs 39p compared to a the same size bottle of branded bleach from the discounter.

Parazone or Domestos will set you back £1, meaning you'll be forking out an extra 61p for cleaning products that do the same job.

You can actually save even more money though by purchased in bottle of Asda Smart Price toilet cleaner for 27p.

Antibacterial all purpose surface wipes 200 pack, B&M – £2

B&M is stocking a bulk pack of 200 anti-bacterial wipes for £2, making each whip just 1p.

They're cheaper than a pack of 105 Dettol cleaning wipes that cost £2.99 from B&M, which works out at almost 3p per wipe.

Remember though, they're not recyclable so you should use them sparingly and only when you can't get your hands on any other cleaning products, like when you're out and about.

Dettol on the go anti-bacterial hand gel 50ml, B&M – £1.49

Many retailers have had to enforce limits on the amount of antibacterial hand gel any one customers can buy.

This is to stop shops running dry of the protective products as shoppers look to stockpile them, but B&M hasn't had to place a cap yet.

The only hand gel it offers is one from Dettol, which is alcohol-based and claims to kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria and viruses.

Superdrug and Boots both sell the same gels for £1.79 and £1.80 each, although both retailers are waiting on more stock as they've both sold out.

Domestos spray with bleach 450ml, Poundland – £1

This Domestos all purpose surface spray contains 0.52g of sodium hypochlorite per 100g, meaning that it's within the threshold outlined by Professor Bloomfield.

Amazon has currently sold out of the 450ml version of the spray, although it's still available to buy from Viking Direct where it costs £2.99.

You can actually get more value for money by buying a bigger, 750ml version from Sainsbury's for £1.75.

Flash Liquid With Bleach Multi Surface Cleaner 1l, Poundland – £1

Once diluted, this chlorine-based product can be used to clean almost any hard surface in your home.

The same bleach costs £2 from Asda so you'll be cutting costs in half by heading to Poundland.

There have been 280 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK, causing panicked shoppers to clear out the supermarket aisles of nappies, dried and tinned foods and even Prosecco.

High street stores have also been running out of hand sanitisers and cleaning products – even though the NHS and Public Health England say the best way to stop the spread of coronavirus is simply to wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds.

But the demand has seen some second-hand sellers take advantage of the low stock, such as putting hand gel which costs 50p in Lidl for sale on eBay for £40.
