There are several different types of extending dining tables.

So we’re going to run through each design and say which situation they suit best.

Centre Leaf & Butterfly

A centre leaf table pulls out at each end, leaving a space in the middle for the extra section of table, which is stored neatly under the centre of the table.

The butterfly option is similar to centre leaf in that it has an extra section stored under the table that fits in place when both ends are pulled out, but this section is folded via a hinge in the middle – just flip open and slot into place.

Best for: Sturdiness.

Drop Leaf & End Leaf

The simplest style of extending dining table, a drop-leaf table has an extension or 'leaf' connected by a hinge that drops down when you don't need it.

You can have one or both ends up or down at any one time.

End-leaf designs have one two extra sections concealed below the table that you slide outwards and up, then lock into place.

Again, you can use one or both sections.

Best for: versatility

Gateleg & End Leg

Gateleg tables fold down to just a narrow strip of wood when dismantled.

The large extension sections (which almost touch the floor) lift up from both sides and are propped up by supporting legs, which also fold away via a hinge when not in use.

End-leg designs expand from just one end.

The extra section is stored underneath the table and is placed on top of the legs, which are fixed in position and pulled outwards from the main table.

Best for: most extension

Butterfly Storage

These are the same as gateleg tables but also come with simple, lightweight chairs that can be folded away and stored inside.
Best for: compact spaces

Flip Top

This type of table has a top section that’s the same size as the perimeter of the four fixed legs when not in use, and flips open via a hinge to double in size.
Best for: not looking like an extending dining table.
