From Saturday, October 17 at 0.01am, London is moving into Tier 2. This means the capital will be in the High coronavirus alert category and will face stricter measures to help stop the spread of the virus. So what are the rules in Tier 2? Can I go shopping with a friend in Tier 2?

Tier 2 rules are a bit stricter than the rules much of the nation has been following for the last month or so.

The curfew on restaurants, pubs and bars is still in play, and schools, universities and places of worship are staying open.

In Tier 2, you must not meet your friends and family indoors in any setting.

Of course, this excludes those you live with or people you have formed a support bubble with.

This applies to people in high alert level areas and people outside of the area.

Tier 2 residents can still see other friends and family, as long as they meet outside or in a garden.

A maximum of six people can meet in a garden or other outdoor space, and you must socially distance.

You can be fined £200 if you break this rule once, with the rate doubling every time you offend up to £6,400.

If you hold or are involved in holding an illegal gathering of more than 30 people, the police can fine you £10,000.

The rules for Tier 2 also cover visiting venues such as pubs, restaurants, leisure and entertainment venues, and places of worship.

In short, no one must mix indoors with anyone who they don’t live with or have a support bubble with.

There are exemptions including childcare bubbles or for work.

Can I go shopping with a friend in Tier 2?

You can’t go shopping with a friend in Tier 2, unless you live with them or they’re in your support bubble.

The rules state those in Tier 2 must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble with them.

This includes private homes and any other indoor venues such as pubs and restaurants.

People in Tier 2 can visit supermarkets and shops but they must keep two metres away from others where possible or a metre plus other precautions.

If you met a friend who lives in Tier 2, you should remain in an outdoor setting and keep a social distance from one another.

In theory, you could meet to go shopping in an outdoor centre and socially distance.

However, the two of you would need to enter shops separately and keep at a distance once inside.

This makes the idea very difficult, so you would be better off meeting in a garden, park or going for a walk.
