Britain’s cheapest supermarket is same for fifth month in a row

The cost of living crisis is taking new and nastier forms, as tiresome price hikes emerge all over the place.

The Bank of England has confirmed inflation has reached a 40-year high of 9%, just a day after its top dog Andrew Bailey warned of “apocalyptic” food price rises.

Fears have been spiked partly because Ukraine, which is a major provider of farmed goods, is struggling to get its stock out of the country and to consumers following Putin’s invasion.

Mr Bailey said: “I do not feel at all happy about this; this is a bad situation to be in. We have to recognise the reality of the situation we face.”

So, with the cost of food likely to take a nasty upwards turn, which are the best supermarkets to get the groceries in the UK?

Which is the cheapest supermarket in the UK?

According to new research by consumer rights expertsWhich?, Lidl was the cheapest supermarket as of April 2022.

Which?'s research looks at a wide range of essentials from kitchen to bathroom to find out which supermarkets offer the best value.

In order to conduct their research, they compiled a basket of 18 items and compared how the total costs stacked up. Here’s what they found:

  • Lloyds and Halifax shutting down another 28 high street branches as full list revealed

  1. Lidl £25.92
  2. Aldi £26.66
  3. Asda £28.46
  4. Sainsbury's £30.73
  5. Ocado £30.75
  6. Tesco £31.01
  7. Morrisons £31.19
  8. Waitrose £35.06

Lidl came in as the UK’s cheapest for a small basket of items for the fifth month in a row, while Asda secured the title of cheapest amongst the traditional supermarkets.

A basket at Waitrose came in at nearly £10 more than it would have done for the same stuff in Lidl.

As well as their research on smaller baskets, they carried out the same research on a larger trolley's worth of goods. This included the original 18 items from the basket plus 45 more.

Here’s what they found:

  1. Asda £132.81
  2. Sainsbury's £138.58
  3. Morrisons £139.65
  4. Tesco £145.92
  5. Ocado £147.35
  6. Waitrose £149.82

Again, Waitrose came in last, £17.01 more expensive than first placed Asda.

Overall, in 2021, Which? found that Aldi was the cheapest across the board, taking home the title six months out of the 12. Asda came first every month out of the non-discount supermarket stores in the same year.
