London-based dermatologist Dr Susan Mayou, of the private Cadogan Clinic in Chelsea, explained lifestyle factors means there is great benefit in applying Vitamin C directly to the face, rather than relying on uptake from food.

Food for your skin: Magic of vitamin C

Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits as well as rosehip, strawberries, spinach, parsley and broccoli.

It’s known for helping boost immunity but is also crucial for collagen production and repairing age-related damage to the complexion.

Vitamin C is also improves connective tissue throughout the body and is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sun spots.

Dr Mayou said: ‘The increasing popularity of selfies now means that people are pointing their phones at their faces for increased periods of time.

‘Blue light [from screens] can penetrate down to the dermis, the deeper layer of skin where collagen and elastin are produced, making skin thinner and more fragile.

‘Increased exposure to this type of light can cause considerable oxidative damage to the skin.

‘Vitamin C has unique anti-oxidant qualities, so I frequently recommend this to my patients to help tackle – and prevent – this kind of damage.’

An amazing video released by the brand shows the protective qualities of Vitamin C, as illustrated on slices of apple.

The apple slice with a layer of Vitamin C applied oxidises far more slowly than a slice without any treatment.

The Radiance Maximising Serum, which contains the equivalent Vitamin C of 30 oranges in one bottle, is part of the new ANEW Vitamin C range.

The product has proved so popular that the equivalent of one bottle has been bought every minute since its release on 17 May.

Anthony Gonzalez, Avon’s Global Director of Skincare and Trend Innovation, added: ‘When applied to your skin, Vitamin C provides antioxidant properties, which neutralise the type of skin damaging free radicals that we’re increasingly being exposed to due to the nature of our modern lifestyles.

‘As our research shows, modern life has essentially led us to ‘lose our shine’ somewhat. What we aim to do with this wonder product is help women – and men – around the world get their radiance back.’
