The third national lockdown is in place across England, with Britons adhering to a wealth of rules and restrictions to combat the rapid spread of coronavirus. England is under a stay at home order, with Britons cautioned only to leave home for essential reasons. During the first and second lockdowns home renovations, cleaning and general home improvements swept the nation.

With more and more time spent at home, Britons could change rooms around, get rid of old furniture and give themselves something to do.

Whether it was making over the front room, transforming the spare room into an office or getting a long-awaited kitchen refurb, Brits have been keeping themselves busy.

Money saved from not having to commute to work has been put back into freshening up lacklustre walls and replacing old furniture.

But all that home improvement can create some unwanted rubbish – and a trip to the tip may be necessary.

Are tips open during lockdown?

Britons can only leave home for essential reasons, and non-essential businesses have had to close during lockdown.

However, the Government has said: “The majority of public services will continue and you will be able to leave home to visit them.”

This includes waste or recycling centres, meaning tips are open.

Despite this, some sites have issued messages to any would-be visitors, warning only to visit if necessary.

Recycle for Greater Manchester has requested people “only visit if you really need to.”

A statement read: “To ensure safety of the public and staff please follow social distancing rules on site.”

Some recycling and waste centres are open but by appointment only, meaning you’d have to schedule a visit.

Before packing up the car with your unwanted items or recycling, check with your local centre’s website to see any restrictions and opening times.

Some sites are using a one in one out system, and so you may have to queue in your car before entering.

Others are requesting just one person visits the site unless they are a blue badge holder. 

And for those with lots of rubbish, some sites are allowing only cars to enter, with vans or larger vehicles requiring a permit.

Visitors should also bear in mind most tips will not allow staff to help, so make sure you are only bringing what you can manage on your own.

Social distancing rules also must be adhered to at all times on recycling or waste centre sites.

The trade and construction sectors are also permitted to continue working during lockdown, meaning any planned renovations on your home can take place.

As well as this, builders merchants and suppliers of building products can stay open.

Britons can also still move home, with estate and letting agents and removals firms permitted to work.

For those hoping to move home, you are allowed to attend to property viewings.

There will be strict rules in place, with viewings arranged by appointment only, and masks worn throughout the viewing.

Would-be buyers are advised to wash hands regularly and try to avoid touching surfaces in the home they are viewing.
