Monty Don is a horticulturist and host of BBC Gardeners’ World. The presenter often shares tips with viewers on the best tasks to do in the garden every week.

In one of his most recent videos, shared on the Gardeners’ World Twitter page, Monty showed viewers the best way to plant daffodil bulbs.

Now is the best time to sow a variety of spring bulbs, including daffodils.

This bulb is one of the most popular in the UK and typically features yellow or white flowers.

Monty explained: “September is the best month for planting daffodil bulbs into long grass.”

The presenter dug hoes in the ground before placing the bulbs into them.

“I’m replanting the pseudonarcissus that we gathered when we made the new mound beds,” he said.

Pseudonarcissus is the native British species of daffodil.

The plant mainly originates in southern Europe and North Africa, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Monty continued: “Try and plant it twice its own depth if you can.

“Cover it over and leave it to do what it does best.”

The horticulturist put the dirt mound back over the bulb after planting it into the ground.

Daffodil bulbs and plants are readily available in a wide range of outlets, including garden centres, supermarkets, hardware stores, and florists.

The RHS has also shared its tips on how best to grow daffodils.

The first thing to do when buying bulbs in person is select the largest bulbs and squeeze them gently to make sure they’re firm.

Avoid any bulbs showing signs of mould.

The RHS recommended removing any weeds before planting your bulbs, as well as forking in plenty of organic matter to improve soil structure and drainage.

You can also add general fertiliser at the rate recommended on the packet.

Daffodils prefer a sunny spot in a fertile, well-drained soil, and only some cultivars will cope in light shade.

These are ‘Acatea’, ‘Jenny’, and ‘Jack Snipe’.

The RHS added that daffodils are best planted in bold groups, rather than individually, for the greatest impact.

After planting daffodil bulbs or plants, water them well to settle the soil or compost around the bulbs and get rid of any air pockets.

This is especially important if no rain is forecast.

After that, bulbs and plants in the ground shouldn’t need additional watering, except if there are long dry spells.

Other than that, daffodils are low maintenance and need little attention.
