Six gardening jobs to do in December for a vibrant and healthy spring garden

While many people may not think December is synonymous with gardening, there are actually lots of jobs that need to be done in the last month of the year.

December marks the end of autumn and the beginning of winter which means gardeners need to get tasks done now before temperatures drop and the weather becomes more extreme.

With this in mind, gardening expert and owner of Prestige Lawns, Kevin Gess, has shared six jobs every gardener should carry out this December.

He said: “December isn’t always a month associated with gardening, but there are still several jobs that need to be carried out in order for your garden to be as healthy as possible come the spring.

“From maintenance to planting spring bulbs, gardeners still have plenty to get on with to keep themselves busy in the run-up to Christmas.”

1. Mulching

Spread a layer of organic mulch on plants to help protect their roots from cold temperatures.

Mulch can be made of dead plant material such as compost, leaves, bark and grass clippings.

2. Pruning

Deciduous trees and shrubs need to be trimmed with shears.

When spring arrives, dead branches need to be removed to “promote strong growth”, according to the expert.

3. Plant bulbs

Kevin explained: “December is ideal for planting bulbs that bloom in the spring. daffodils, crocuses, and tulips.

“Simply dig a hole, insert the bulbs, cover them with dirt, and presto.

“You’ve just started the process of planting the seeds for a vibrant spring garden. It’s similar to giving a present to your future self.”

4. Composting

Compost needs extra care throughout the winter months to help convert scraps and materials into rich, nutrient-rich soil.

5. Give tools a clean

December is the month to give gardening tools some TLC. Clean tools thoroughly, sharpen the blades and apply some oil to them.

6. Feed the birds

December is an ideal month to set up bird feeders for the local birds who often struggle during the winter months.
