Restored cottage in hometown of an unsung Easter Rising hero

Among the comparatively unsung women of the 1916 Rising was one Mary Adrien, a tireless messenger during Easter Week whose name was mentioned on the GPO’s Garrison Roll of Honour.

Mary, better known as Molly, is commemorated near her home at Oldtown in north Co Dublin, although the people who wanted to honour her did manage to misspell her name. On the bridge at Oldtown is a plaque inscribed ‘In remembrance of Mary Adrian [sic] and Comrades, late Old IRA Fingal Brigade 1916 – 1921’.

Near the bridge is Oldtown Hall, a tiny and very cute corrugated iron community hall dating from 1880, and on the other side of the bridge, rivalling the hall for cuteness, is a dainty bungalow known as Cathy’s Cottage.

It’s a traditional cottage that was reconstructed 15 years ago but it has authentic cottage-type features including a half-door, a country-style kitchen, and vaulted ceilings with the rafters exposed.

It’s 861 sq ft in size including a dainty first floor where there’s one bedroom as well as a mezzanine study overlooking the dual-aspect kitchen below. The kitchen is fitted with pine cabinets and an Aga, and it has a separate utility room.

The second bedroom is on the ground floor at the back and has French doors to the garden, where there’s a patio and shed.

The sitting room, to the left of the entrance hall, is triple-aspect with a wooden floor and it too has French doors that give onto steps down to the patio. The fireplace there has an electric stove in it.

Cathy’s Cottage is right in the village of Oldtown and about 20 minutes’ drive from Dublin Airport, and there’s fast broadband to the house. It’s for sale for €320,000 with Sherry FitzGerald Swords (01) 890 0944.
