While daffodils pop up in spring, they actually need to be planted in September.

The gardening experts at Homebase have shared their advice for planting daffodil bulbs now.

The experts visited Holland Park in London where head gardener Stella shared how to plant daffodil bulbs.

To plant daffodil bulbs, gardeners will need a garden fork, a trowel, a dipper or a stick and some daffodil bulbs.

Choosing the right bulbs

Daffodil bulbs should be plump and firm, not soft and squishy.

“Soft and squishy bulbs could be rotten inside” so they should not be planted.

Preparing to plant

Daffodils are easy-to-grow and grow in most soils but there are certain conditions they don’t like.

The experts said: “Daffodils grow in most soils but if the soil is very dry plant the bulbs a day after it has rained.

“The ideal site should be sunny or lightly shaded. Remove any weeds or stones and use a fork or trowel to loosen and aerate the soil.”

Planting daffodil bulbs

Use a trowel to dig out a hole large enough to fit all the bulbs in.

The hole should be twice the length of the bulb itself. Loosen the soil inside the hole to help the roots grow more easily.

Bulbs must be planted with their tip pointing upwards. Position the bulbs in a random pattern two to three times their width apart.

The experts said: “Replace the soil using your hands. Gently draw the soil across the bulbs, taking care not to move them.

“Press the soil down with your fingers, don’t tread on the soil as it may damage the growing points of the bulbs.”

Watering daffodil bulbs

Unless the soil is very dry, there is no need to water the bulbs.

Newly-planted bulbs may rot if the soil becomes sodden and waterlogged.

Ensure daffodils in containers are sheltered so they don’t become waterlogged.

There should be enough rain through the autumn and winter to provide bulbs with enough moisture by March or April.

In spring, the bulbs should transform and become beautiful, yellow blooms.
