Winter can seem like a dull period for gardening, especially when the weather is damp and cold. However, for keen gardeners, there are still plenty of jobs that can be done to get ahead for spring. A gardening expert at Jacksons Fencing has shared their top weekend gardening tips.

Leigh Barnes, gardening expert at Jackson Fencing has shared winter gardening tips that Britons can carry out this weekend.

Move leaves

Leaves should be moved away from fence borders to provide protection against the winter weather. 

Gardeners should fit timber gravel boards to stop fence panels coming into contact with the ground.

This way gardeners can avoid pile leaves touching the fence panels. 

Leigh explained: “It’s important leaves aren’t left to build up against timber fencing panels. 

“Using specially treated gravel boards will prevent fence panels from coming into contact with the ground. 

“It is therefore essential that debris isn’t piled high to touch the fence panels at any time to prolong their life.”

A blanket of leaves will also provide protection against the inevitable harsh frosts and freezing snow associated with winter.

Leigh added: “Clear all your fencing borders of any lingering weeds, or fallen leaves, and reuse them on your flowerbeds.

“This will create a layer of protection to protect against the winter weather.“

Mow the lawn

Mowing the lawn removes the wet grass and improves sunlight accessibility.

Gardeners should complete a final mow of their lawn for the year around the beginning of winter.

Prune the bushes

Winter is a great time to prune any bushes in the garden.

Leigh said: “Leaving plant matter on your fence over winter months can create ‘in-ground’ conditions and can damage it. 

“When pruning, it’s a good time to cut back any trees that are located near your fencing.”

This will help avoid any damage to fence panels.

Welcome wildlife 

Spreading leaves will provide better habitats for wildlife.

For example, holes can be made in gardens to allow hedgehogs to roam freely from garden to garden.

Leigh added: “Don’t cut hedges back until the very end of winter.”

This is so that any visiting birds will be able to benefit.
