Weeds are a nuisance that can make even the most beautiful and well-kept flowerbeds look overgrown and messy. Getting weeds under control can harm your other plants if you decide to use chemicals. British gardens are being urged to try homemade and chemical-free alternatives to keep their weeds under control.

Although creating your own weed killers may sound laborious, it could also save you a lot of money in the long run.

Vinegar, salt and baking soda are just some of the ways you can remove weeds.

What other natural methods can you use to remove weeds from your garden?

Experts from GardeningExpress.co.uk have shared three ways you can remove weeds using household, natural products.

Mulch

Mulch are loose coverings or sheets of material put on top of the surface of the soil.

Mulch can help make your garden look more tidy and can also protect plant roots, help retain moisture and deter some pests.

GardeningExpress recommends layering mulch with newspapers or cardboard to eliminate existing weeds.

It will also help stop weeds from growing up through the soil too.

Cornmeal

Cornmeal is a coarse flour made from dried corn and can be known as cornflour in some parts of the world.

According to GardeningExpress, Cornmeal gluten can act as an organic herbicide and is actually free of any toxic chemicals.

If you scatter it over your soil it can help prevent crabgrass and dandelions from growing.

Cornmeal will also help stop the seeds that perennial weeds shed in the summer from sprouting.

Over a long period of time, these weeds will eventually decline.

Rubbing alcohol

Using alcohol in the garden may sound strange but it could actually help extinguish weeds.

Mix just two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol with a litre of water and pop it in a spray bottle.

The alcohol will help remove moisture from the weeds.

It’s important to try and spray the weeds themselves and not your plants.

A spokesperson for GardeningExpress.co.uk said weeds can ruin a garden that you’ve spent hours perfecting.

They said: “There’s nothing more disheartening that seeing hours of hard work in the garden ruined by pesky weeds that seem to sprout from nowhere.

“There are loads of commercial products on the market that will do the job in killing the weeds quickly, but most of these contain potentially harmful chemicals.

“Not only are these homemade concoctions a chemical-free alternative, but you’ll also save the expense of store bought products.

“Products with high acidic values are usually effective, but you should avoid spraying them directly on soil as substances like vinegar can break down the soil structure and kill beneficial microorganisms.”
