Gardeners’ World: ‘Save yourself a fortune’ – Monty Don on how to save cash this month

Monty Don will return tonight for a new episode of Gardeners’ World. Tonight’s episode will see Monty prepare his borders for a change in season. Meanwhile, Adam Frost and Advolly Richmond will be visiting the historic garden of Scampston Hall.

Now October is here, Monty has shared some jobs Britons can be getting on with in their gardens this month.

Monty shares his monthly gardening tricks and tips on his blog.

On this month’s blog post, Monty shared how gardeners can “save a fortune” while gardening.

He said: “Save yourself a fortune by collecting seeds from perennial plants, using paper (not polythene) bags.

“Always label seed packets immediately.

“Store in a cool, dry place until ready for sowing.”

Some plants that produce seeds include sweet Williams, alliums, echinacea, penstemons and sweet peas.

Monty also recommended sowing sweet peas in October for “bigger plants” that will potentially have a stronger root system.

You can also sow them in November, March, April and May.

Sweet peas flower from June to October and produce a lovely scent.

You can leave sweet pea seed pods on the plants until they turn the colour of a paper bag.

Collect them on a dry day and store them in a paper bag in a dry place.

Monty said sowing the sweet peas now will also ensure the flowers last longer.

However, there is a “disadvantage” to sowing the seeds now.

The gardening expert said they will need to be protected over the winter months if the weather turns bad.

Monty recommends sowing some now and then another batch in February to ensure you definitely get some of the flowers.

He puts three seeds in a three inch pot with potting compost.

Leave them on a windowsill or in a greenhouse to germinate.

Once they start to sprout and leaves appear, put them in a protected area or cold frame.

Monty said they just need protection from hard frosts and extremely wet weather.

Then, plant them out in April.
