Thin fruit

Adam said at this time of year, apple trees naturally shed excess fruit.

He said: “You can help this process by reducing each cluster of developing fruit down to two or three apples.

“This takes time, but is worth the effort and will ensure you get the very best from your harvest.”

Dead headroses

Roses look truly beautiful as this time of year, but when there petals start to curl and their colour starts to fade, it may be time to deadhead them.

Adam suggested: “If you have a repeat flowering rose, it’s a good idea to deadhead them as the flowers go over.

“Don’t just pull off the spent petals but snip off the fading blooms below the head.

“This will encourage your rose to keep flowering.”

Net soft fruit

If you’ve been growing strawberries this year, they’re probably just starting to fruit.

But the delectable fruit won’t just be appealing to the human eye, but birds too.

To stop birds picking off your fruit, Adam suggests putting netting over them.

He said: “As soft fruit ripens, it’s important to protect it from the birds.

“Take some netting and drape it over the plants, fixing it firmly in place all the way round.

“Make sure it’s taut so birds can’t accidentally get tangled in it.

“Leave it in place until your fruit is ripe and ready to harvest.”

Monty Don will not be joining Adam, Nick and Kate on tonight’s show.

The gardener has not shared a reason as to why he is not in tonight’s episode but has remained active on social media.
