In its 108-year history, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show had never been held in September. This year, it began on September 21 and ended on September 26.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show: Best of 2021 on BBC ONE took a look back on some of the highlights of the show.

Sophie Raworth and Joe Swift took viewers through some of the highlights of the week.

From flower display and show gardens, celebrity spotting and an emphasis on sustainability, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show was busy.

The most prestigious flower show in the world was again graced by Royals this year, with Princess Anne, Prince Edwards and Sophie Wessex all visiting.

Princess Anne was “really interested in the idea of taking back an urban space and greening it up”.

But the Royals were not the star of the show.

This year, the BBC RHS People’s Choice Award winner was Tom Massey and his Yeo Valley Organic Garden.

Tom also won a Gold medal.

On why people resonated so much with his garden, the designer, whose favourite season is autumn, said: “I think it’s partly the message, the organic message.”

His garden was the first organic show garden at Chelsea.

“I think there’s a real shift towards more sustainable practice, being kinder to the environment, not killing off all the insects, reducing the use of chemicals.”

Tom was “embracing the theme of autumn.”

He said: “This is the one and only September show, and this garden really celebrates that.”

One of the features of Tom’s garden was the egg.

The idea was you can raise yourself up so you can look over the wonderful meadow.

And apparently, “the view is superb”.

Another People’s Choice garden was The Parsley Box by Alan Williams.

The Best Small Garden winner was a modern take on a traditional kitchen garden, and it really resonated with the visitors to the show.
